I speculated on that, but yes. Keep in mind the mitigation measure might simply be "Dude, you're 5 km away and the activities planned during night shift will not cause any adverse effects"....then you include a nice map with pretty colours showing decibel ranges decreasing the farther away you get from the work site. Albertans have to do this all the time for trappers and any other inhabitants (permanent or temporary) that may be nearby a construction site. Petronas will also have to live up to what they promise.

I just pulled that number out of the air as an example. Mitigation could be as extreme as relocation of inhabitants as well. Likely not, but possible.

From the aboriginal and socio-economic side, we always ended up being pretty rigorous when it came to actually recommending a re-route. I remember one time we discovered 3 old cabins - probably from the 1930s - on the edge of a cut-block and right within the proposed project footprint. Some of our First Nations present believed that cabin had been used by their ancestors. Our recommendations were for an archaeological assessment to be done on the site with First Nations observing, to narrow the workspace by 1-2m, or even to move the buildings from site altogether. The client went with the first two options at a very minimal cost.

It is the aggregate where these things go awry.

As near as I can tell the only inhabitants is a camp setup to protest the project. So the only people who would be inconvenienced by noise put themselves there.

The nearest houses are actually about 2km from the construction site, so that could be a legitimate concern.

2 km would be considered close enough for project consultation, milestones etc... to be communicated to residents, but not enough for any kind of compensation. Not unless there were roads being built that intersected residential property, then you would get a bit of cash.

I think the discussion was around night time construction. I'm not sure I'd want to listen to pile drivers all night long. I'm sure 2km is close enough to hear them.

I'd be interested to see the location. 2 km in the middle of the Pacific NW rain forest will pretty much muffle anything.

Maybe it is something that has been raised before, but I was wondering why there was never a secondary site recommended for the Gateway project. Kitamat has so many barriers, with small and large islands in the inlet, and the Great Bear rainforest to the south. It was always doomed to be held up by environmental concerns.

North of Prince Rupert, there is another inlet near Georgetown, with both sides owned by Canada, although the Alaskan border is very close. Many of these environmental concerns would be eliminated by a change of location.

The obvious downside of Georgetown is that there is no rail service, or major roadway, but it's not exactly that far out from Prince Rupert that these things could not be built.
