If we're targeting expensive veteran centres from rebuilding teams, give me Anze Kopitar every day of the week.

Kopitar and Toews are fairly comparable.
Toews is a year younger and has a year less on his contract. Obviously is more likely to be available.
Over the last 2 seasons he has scored 141pts in 152 games

Why would the Jets do that? Toews is 10 years older and makes 10.5M

Chicago has to add Dylan Strome to that if they want a decade of Laine, IMO.

Well not straight up, but Laine rumours keep swirling around and why wouldn’t you bring back a high end local centre with winning running through him?

Now watch them be one of the winners of the next 2 draft lotteries. Worked for the Rangers.

I didn't realize Kane and Toews only had 3 years left on their contracts. I thought it was closer to 5 years, so I could see someone picking up Kane. Toews is really overpaid though

So the Oilers got knocked out of playoff contention in 4 games by a team that just announced a rebuild that hasn’t made any significant moves this off season.
Everything leads to E=NG

Yeah, but it is a MUCH easier proposition after three championships than without.

Toews is my target. I'd give 1st 2021 and any of prospect they want+Bennett if Chicago retain some salary.

Kane feels more like a future ranger, but Strome+Kakko+ for Toews would make a lot of sense.

Well why wouldn’t Chicago retain salary on their biggest contracts to make them more desirable and in return stock their cupboards with more picks and prospects?
Kane at 8.5 or 9 mill AAV for the next 3 years is more palatable than 10.5 no doubt and GM’s might be willing to pay the fee in top prospects and or picks if they feel Kane, Toews or Keith push them over the top.

3 x 10.5 for Toews is too rich. They have to retain on that deal.
Kane, almost worth it but considering they’ll have plenty of cap room why not retain to increase your return, widen your buyers group to provide more choice and create a bidding war.

Teams eating salary is, well, rare
People are saying 50% retained. Imagine a team eating $5 M on Kane and facing him in the playoffs. Yeah
Look. If it happens I will issue a sincere apology

Flames going all in on Kane would be so nice to see I can’t even begin to say. And I get that ‘he wouldn’t waive to play in western Canada yada yada yada’ argument but the guy is on record for saying how much he digs Gaudreau and I think Kane still wants to win and could be that big final piece to the core and especially the top 6.
Trade
Rittich + Hanifin + Ryan + Pelletier + 2021 1st + 2022 2nd (about 10 mill out)
For
Kane (2.5 mill retained) + Carpenter (9 mill in)
Gaudreau - Monahan - Kane
Tkachuk - Backlund - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Bennett - Dube
Lucic - Nordstrom - Carpenter
Robinson/Gawdin
Giordano - Andersson
Valimaki - Tanev
Mackey - Kylington
Yelesin
Markstrom
Zagidulin

There are 8 active contracts with retained salary.
There were 13 retentions from Feb 2020, of which only one is an active contract. David Backes. Not stuff carried in to future years
2 Chicago just recently retained on. How much dead salary do you think they want to eat?
Like I say, I will issue a now half hearted apology when it happens
More importantly, since when the hell is eating celery rare?

Valimaki, Mackey and Yelesin are rookies and Kylington is almost one. And Markstrom needs rest in a compressed schedule.
