Man some people must have got some sweet upgrades because of that flight. Plus a bunch of people could stretch out in the back of the 747.

Anecdotally, the regular 787-8 that BA flies here does not have a first class, only business class. Occasionally they will bring the larger 787-9 which has 8 first class seats that fly empty and are not sold.

Take lots of pictures, if you're allowed!

And can you bring a guest, or three?

The view up there is pretty sweet.

I don't think I was allowed to take pictures when I went up there.

30 inch pitch... Even with the new thinner seats on United it was a tight fit!

WS is currently switching over to a slimmer seat for a 174-seat config in their 738's... had they not, then AC would have had more seats in an equivalent type than WS?! What planet is this!

The type of seats are really important though. The new WS seats have more knee room for sure than the old ones, despite 6 more seats in the airplane.

KLM like many others is in the process of slowly retiring their 747-400 fleet. However one of their current 747's is named "City of Calgary", the local spotters are hoping to convince KLM to send this bird to Calgary one time before retirement, video by Alex Peterson:

Close call near Chicago!

Quote:
A United Airlines flight travelling from Vancouver to Chicago Monday afternoon had a near-collision with a glider over Rockford, Ill., U.S. Federal Aviation Agency said.

The pilot of United Flight 246 reported seeing a glider while flying near Rockford, the FAA said in an emailed statement. The airliner was approaching Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, a passenger said.

The Boeing 737 quickly climbed 122 metres to avoid a collision.

I imagine someone was flying where they shouldn't have been?

Whoa!

Quote:
Less than five months after KLM put the plane into service, the aircraft lost power in all four engines after inadvertently flying through a volcanic ash cloud on a flight between Japan and Anchorage, Alaska.

Rapidly losing altitude as the crippled plane glided towards what seemed like an inevitable crash, the crew managed to restart their engines and make an emergency landing.

Despite causing $80 million in damage, nobody was injured and “City of Calgary” was soon back in the skies.

Do planes typically have a name like that?

Not as common anymore, but there are still airlines that name their planes. I recall Lufthansa having names on theirs (Virgin Atlantic too), and I think WestJet may even have one or two named after long time employees that have passed away.

Hey Bigtime, do you know if the new Westjet Max took off out of YYC this afternoon? I thought I might have seen it around 1:30 this afternoon but I was on the other side of the airport and I wasn't sure.
