The crux of the argument is that whether it be bullet proof armor or goaltender protective padding we have technology to make impact absorbing padding that's not massive. Goaltender's waists and shoulders are doubled. Take a look at goaltenders without padding and the size of their asses in their pants. That's not about protection. That's about making themselves as large as possible to take up net space.
