Magpies are to Calgarians what Calgarians are to the rest of Canada.

Which is why it can only be the Magpie.

-Magpies are the most intelligent land animals in North America (along with ravens and crows). Animals which have passed the mirror test are common chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, dolphins, elephants, humans...
No dogs, cats, pigs, horses, crows, parrots, etc. have passed the mirror test.
Magpies also have one of the highest encephalization quotients in the animal kingdom.

-Magpies actually exist in Calgary - even in the winter.

-The fact that magpies are trolls is largely due to their intelligence

I saw a magpie that got hit by a car and was the bird equivalent of a quadriplegic. His buddies wasted no time trying to make him their next meal but he valiantly fought them off while only moving his beak. Magpies are badass.

So do the others on the list, I get all of them in my yard year-round (except maybe the nuthatches, I don't really see them in the winter.

I can't vote for magpie just because they're such jerks to all the other birds, went with the northern flicker.

I've seen Blue Jays around in Calgary a few times for sure.

I am also surprised by Robin's not being listed. I have fond memories of finding nests/eggs as a kid.

Magpies it is. They're annoying but tough as f***.

I would've said robin to avoid the obvious magpie choice that will annoy many a Calgarian, but since it's not listed anyway, it's gotta be magpie.

Unless I'm forgetting something obvious, anything else would feel like a reach just to avoid crowning those winged savages.
