I would disagree that he doesn't "get it". He gets it far more than most all of them, it just doesn't change who he is.
Were....past tense.

He has really screwed himself....but with his ego and love of money that should not be a surprise to anyone. He really misjudged his importance on this.

And to your last comment which is true, its also no longer applicable. He is going to take his "leave" (more likely been told he cannot compete for X amount of time on the tour) and try to re-invent himself and salvage something from this debacle that allows him to save what should be a world class legacy in the sport.

And I don't find him that media savvy either. Like someone else said, he's a force of a golfer and has a natural engaging and funny personality. That combination was always going to lead to great marketing and money making ability.

I find his execution of taking advantage of what he has clunky and not that impressive, personally. I mean he's a guy that loudly announced his jump into social media years after many stars were already on it, sounding like he was the first smart golfer to understand that you can interact with fans this way, lol.

Thanked for proper Defcon level. I always laugh when people suggest that a bad situation is at Defcon 5.

So AMEX dropped him today to join KPMG, Amstel, and Callaway golf.

Phil Mickelson's controversial comments about the PGA Tour and organizers of a Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway league continue to create backlash, as the six-time major champion will no longer serve as host of The American Express event in La Quinta, California.

The PGA Tour on Saturday told The Desert Sun that in addition to Mickelson not returning as host in January 2023, the Mickelson Foundation will no longer be the charitable arm of the event.
Likely more to come.

For a guy who has a big love of money, this has to be starting to really hurt.

He wont actually feel any pain though as IIRC he has earned over 800M in his career.
