Since this is [hopefully] an election year, I'll be donating another few hundred in the first week of January, even though it'll be well over a year until I realize any tax credit.
Thanks- done!

Who cares. You aren't winning unless you have a 30 point lead in the polls Rachel.

Change your god damn party name. Dual wins. Gain some non-deplorable UCPers and a big FU to Jagmeet.

It simply won't matter. Literally anything they call themselves will just be the "new NDP" to anyone that opposes/is on the fence with them. It wouldn't gain them votes.

Some Albertans: We want a pragmatic government and we're willing to move away from the UCP to the main centrist option.

Those same Albertans: Our personal egos can't let us vote for the NDP because we don't like that acronym and their orange branding.

Anyone who lets this pettiness drive their electoral decisions deserves four more years of the Hydroxychloro-Queen.

Nice gesture to help out Albertans during these tough times.

Haha. Good one. We’re paying the same price, oil companies have taken the “gesture” straight into their pockets, and the government has lost revenue.

“Helping Albertans” or something though.

Does very little to help the struggling Albertans who don’t drive though, maybe they could have reallocated the revenue raised from maintaining even a reduced tax to helping those most in need.

I’d really love to see the details around how they are going to ensure that the savings are passed along to consumers.

Ya, this doesn't help struggling Albertans, it helps those who drive lots. Does the price of a transit pass drop? No, of course not. That's not to say no one who drives isn't struggling, but this is a really dumb thing to do. Give up revenues that can be directed at those struggling, or just hand it back to drivers of inefficient vehicles? ####ing dumb.

You really think an Alberta only drop in fuel taxes will reduce things like grocery prices? Because if so, I've got a Danielle Smith to sell you.

If you're so dumb that a name change makes any difference, you shouldn't be allowed to vote at all.

You literally can't win an election in Alberta (and likely anywhere) without dumb people voting for you.

Changing the name has no appreciable downside and would pick up at least some voters (and possibly quite a few). They should do it.

But imagine what you could do with that *checks size of gas tank* $5 in savings per fill up!

The downside is, as Jayswin said, everybody will still just remember them as the NDP and it will be brought up ad infinitum, so they're just opening themselves up for a continuous mocking by opponents.

All of that kind of works across the political board. I think we are certainly seeing varying degrees of being on the right as well as varying degrees on the left. I still believe that after all of the BS and smoke clears, pretty much any party that wins becomes/drifts into centrist.

The mockery of bringing the Wildrose fringe element into the conservative party seemed to last about three months.

The idea is to market the separation between the provincial and federal parties. Easy win.

I disagree with this. Falling fuel prices are actually a significant stimulus to the economy because almost everyone drives. If people save $15-20 on a tank of gas, they spend that elsewhere and it’s not nothing. For people who are really struggling and take transit there are low income passes available, as there should be. And not every single plan that happens needs to be income tested. Sure, some people benefit more, because they drive more, but that’s fine.

And aside from stupid voters (whose votes count the same as smart voters), the fact is the NDP is the one party where a provincial member is also a federal member. So, it’s more than a symbolic gesture.

This post seems like a lot of fun. I guess how much fun depends first and foremost on how you define “significant stimulus”. Next it depends on how many people are going to save $15-$20 on a tank of gas with a savings of $0.13/litre. Then you’ve got the whole question of why one would bring up low income transit passes as a reason to justify creating more savings for people who aren’t low income. Then as a bonus we get the puzzle of trying to figure out how a person driving a Honda Civic couldn’t possibly benefit less than someone filling up a big pickup truck or Escalade who drives an equal or even lesser amount than they do.
