So Zellers is opening in Sunridge this week. My guess is it it won't look or feel like Zellers at all but will just be red lipstick on regular Hudson's bay retail accoutrements. The sheer presence of carpet already makes it look so very wrong.

I'm more excited for the food trucks that are supposed to sell Big Z burgers and hot chicken sandwiches.

That's the new retail strategy when closing out. It started about a decade ago, I believe. They used to just say "we're closing, get rid of everything". But then when social media came to power and everyone talked about everything, they realized that you could create excitement over closing sales.
They found that people will flock like seagulls as soon as a closing sale starts and many will walk away with things even if the sales are silly. Then you just slowly move the percentage up until almost nothing good is left when you're up to the old style 50-80% off.

Failure, it has zero recognition to the old Zellers and offers nothing that Walmart doesn't. The opportunity was to prey on nostalgia, instead they went with "hey, come shop for Walmart stuff in a dark, carpeted area the size of a 7 eleven".

Counter point - They've seemed to be on death watch for the last 20 years or so.

Am I the only one that doesn't get the idea of Zellers nostalgia?
I mean, I remember going there as a kid, the cheap rubber stank of the shoe department, the diner with the booths and melamine tables... None of that is good. I want zero of that in my life ever again.

My only memory of Zellers is a near death experience. The back wall was steel back mounted shelving all the way up to the ceiling, that was loaded with furniture apparently according to my mom. The shelving was obviously overloaded and something broke and everything came crashing down on top of my mom and my brother.

I used to assemble bikes, BBQ's and furniture for Zellers. I've got a little PTSD about that store. No thank you.

Was in Bed Bath and Beyond a few weeks ago and they were 10% off, so yeah, no smoking deals.

People go crazy for the illusion of a deal. These stores should just cycle through close - change name - closing sale - close - change name - closing sale - close.

Good insight here:
"Finch adds that the past Zellers slogan of "where the lowest price is the law" also no longer applies.
"The global purchasing power of Amazon, and Walmart too, now live by the strategy of the lowest ‘cost’ is the law, not the lowest price," he said.
"This is where Zellers is going to be challenged, they just won't be able to have the purchasing power, the influence to be able to lower their costs enough to be able to compete effectively on price as a single dimension."
