Italy has won their 2nd Davis Cup as Jannik Sinner closes out Alex De Minaur 6-3 6-0. Earlier, Matteo Arnaldi defeated Alexei Popyrin in three sets. Forza Italia!!

It would be great if the Aussie Open gave Marina a qualifying wild card, but if not, it's no big deal. If she continues the form she displayed at the BJK Cup, she'll be a fixture at the biggest tournaments in short order.

Yeah, I don't think it's big deal, she should be playing a smaller tournaments that fit her schedule instead of flying to Melbourne for maybe one match.

Yeah, continue to work on her game at ITF tourneys and smaller WTA events is the way to go, no need to rush her and pile on a bunch of expectations.

Yeah, a lot of guys chase this, they are alternates for grand slam qualifying and the show up to a venue to experience it but don't play and it messes up their travel schedule. I think it's something like 20,000 USD just to lose in the first round of qualifying, which is more than winning an entire challenger event (ie. Leon Draxl won 10,000 as the Calgary Champion)

those Sampras highlights reminded me of a recent post from Hugh Clarke, analyzing the evolution of the running forehand. Pete vs Roger vs Novak:

Source: https://hughclarke.substack.com/p/th...big-3-part-iii

it went from Pete continuing to run basically off-court, to Roger taking an extra step for recovery, to Novak planted like a tree on contact and already moving back to the middle. I've always said Djoker's not my cup of spectator tea, but it's as close to tennis perfection in every way that we might ever get.

Love Hugh Clarke's substack.

He recently did a 3 part deep dive into Federer's game and his attacking patterns, Nadal's game and his attacking patterns and Djokovic's game and attacking patterns.

The TLDR: Federer and Nadal like to run around the backhand and hit a forehand. Djokovic is balanced on both backhand and forehand. (But you should still go read the articles. Extremely well written).

Those articles really highlighted why the big 3 were the big 3. Djokovic's balanced game incrementally eats away at any top20 players game. It's weird, you have a much greater appreciation when reading about Djokovic's game than when watching it.

ETA: the article in Inglewood Jack post is the part 3 of the deep dive by Hugh Clarke.

Is tennis better with Rafa? Absolutely, but the young guys have me excited for the future as well. I haven't watched very much of the NextGen finals from Jeddah, but you have two young French lads in Fils and Van Assche battling it out right now in one of the semi-finals. Fils especially is one to watch in 2024, Van Assche doesn't quite have the same power, but he's a wall and can run all day.

Hamad Medjedovic beats Arthur Fils in the NextGen finals in Jeddah. First time the final has gone the distance.

So was Monfils. Won 3 of the 4 slams in junior. Won an ATP tournament and made two other finals at age 18.

I've been down this road.

The 2008 French semifinal, Monfils was 21.
