Yes I misinterpreted your post. Although if you don't intend to play him why not buy him out and see if he can't get a contract somewhere else.

With Steeger now signed, the best bets for Flames free agent signings are a #5 d-man and a backup goalie. Doubtful we sign a high profile centre or right wing. Better to give some of the kids a shot anyway.

The problem with buyouts is they stay on for longer than the term of the contract.

Bouma to the AHL is off the book in 2018 offseason
Bouma buyout stays on the books until 2019 offseason

The additional cap savings don't even pay for a veteran minimum contract so why not be done with it sooner?

He has been bad two years running now so I would say this opens the door for one of our young goalies to win a spot, or quickly get a call up during the year. I like that side of it. If you were looking for a dependable, solid backup, IDK.

Hiller, Ramo, Elliott, Johnson, Smith, Lack. What a list.

He should just do one last year with Pittsburgh at league minimum and then call it a career.

Who is most likely in consideration for a #5 d-man for the Flames - if anyone.

My list of suspects would include Michael Stone, Trevor Daley, Johnny Oduya, Matt Greene, Francois Beauchemin, Cody Franson....but who could be had for about $2.5MM fo $3MM max on a 1-2 year deal? Stone and Daley might be low probabilities.

Oduya on the cheap. He's old.

Del Zotto would be a decent option for #5

Default 2017/2018 Trade Speculation and Rumors

Oduya, Del Zotto, Stone, Williams, Marleau (one year); if any of those signings happen on July 1st I'll be happy

You're going to be unhappy.

None of those players are signing for one year.

Meant to say Marleau as the only one on a one year, which I doubt he wants.

Marleau and Williams are the only ones I would want for more than one year.

Kulak is (better be) the 5. I really don't think, expect, or want the team to add any more defensemen or goalies during the summer now.

What makes you so sure a player that couldn't crack our top 7 this season will be a #5 next season
