How's she doing today?

Go us!
Also, I think it’s pretty clear to see that while COVID might not greatly affect most kids under 12, they are still a main factor in spreading it to those who will be affected.
School age kids getting their doses is going to be huge in limiting the spread further.

Fever down to 99, coughing a little now and then, but mostly just congested.
Still, I'm staying on high alert for now.
Good news is my son felt absolutely fine today outside of a sore arm.

It's weird that Pfizer targeted 5-11 and Moderna targeted 6-11.
Pfizer aiming for that lucrative kindergarten market.

My kid is 11 and turns 12 next year. If this gets approved before the end of the year, presumably they'll offer the 1/3 dose, whereas if we wait until January would they offer the full dose? Seems like a big difference, no?

In response to the question I posed above, this article talks about immunity responses in kids and the 10 microgram “kid dose” versus the 30 microgram “adult dose” : https://amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/620591/
Basically, both versions should be fine for 12 year olds, and the 30 isn’t necessarily better (or necessary to generate a strong immune response) compared to 10:
Quote:
Some of the lingering squishiness is probably why a lot of parents have been wondering what to do with kids who are teetering on 12—an age jump that would instantly triple their vaccine dose. But experts told me that parents shouldn’t fret about the precision of age. “Your immune system doesn’t know exactly when your birthday is,” she said; kids on this precipice will likely respond enthusiastically to either dose.
|
Edit: related article also suggests not “waiting” for your kid to turn 12 to get the adult dose: https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/27/healt...ess/index.html

It will bring me so much joy when I can be 80,000th in line to sign up my son. My daughter will be a few years out (or months depending on when <5 gets approved), but the more protection and spread prevention the better.

Good visual on the impact of boosters in the UK. This chart shows the estimated chance of catching COVID over a 1-year period (based on current UK prevalence) adjusted for the time since the 2nd dose and after a booster:
https://twitter.com/user/status/1461374201474998275
So you can see waning protection up to 6 months and then the 3rd dose gives fantastic immunity that is hopefully more durable.
Related to that, here's a Moderna Phase 1 participant. He received his first round of vaccinations (low dose Moderna) in March/April of 2020 and then a booster a year later. Now 8 months after his 3rd dose, his antibody levels are still above 2,500 U/ml (which is in line with the average response soon after a 2nd dose):

As one of many people who had mixed initial shots (AZ and then Pfizer in my case) and then a 3rd Pfizer a few months later to get the two of the same for travel purposes I'm wondering what the guidance will be on booster shots.

So really it's about 3 months from now before a significant portion of children have full protection. Hopefully one dose still cuts spread well.
