My vizio 5.1 system is this one with the flat subwoofer (https://www.amazon.ca/VIZIO-Wireless.../dp/B01G3STJTK) - does it have different rear speakers from the system you're talking about? Because mine are plenty loud and honestly it's a much less subtle "surround" profile than my other 5.1 system in the bedroom. Which isn't a bad thing (even though it can be jarring in some movies to really feel like stuff is happening right beside you) but it certainly isn't what I would call "quiet". Just the opposite.

Precisely. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding the point to systems like this, a majority of the sound should be coming from the front speakers. Rear speakers are meant to provide immersion or ambiance like car horns in traffic, people chatting in a cafe, the sound of a car approaching from off screen etc...
Of course there are times where the rear speakers are used as loudly as the front. Recently watched the 2nd Jason Bourne movie...at the start when they are being chased by the assassin, they are standing on a bridge and the bad guy takes a shot at them from off screen resulting in a large bang coming from the rear right speaker. Scared the crap out of us but that's the point.
The last Hobbit Film, right as they crew is just about to jump out and join the battle, the big dood blows the horn. As it stops, the sound resonated around all speakers and faded out into the back. Incredible. That's ear porn IMO.

I had a similar situation with the "default" settings when I bought mine. The back speakers were whisper quiet and sound was fading in an out (not even surround). I reset all settings to default to clear the slate and start tweaking the settings and it resolved the issue. No tinkering required for me after reset to default.
Thank you so much to GoinAlltheWay for the settings texts, I'm going to try those tomorrow to tweak things to perfection.
But turns out this was the issue right here. Reset to default and they're actual surround sound now. They sounded exactly like you described and now sound excellent.

It looks like the back speakers are the same speakers as the other Vizio 5.1 systems (38, 40 etc.) that I've seen.
The "quiet" issue in the back which Jayswin and I had is a settings issue, not a hardware issue. I don't know what it is, but you can be blowing your ear drums to oblivion from the front sound bar, but the back is still only perhaps as loud as if you were listening to sounds from an earbud blasting on max from a few feet away. And yet, that's not even the issue. The issue (at least this part for me) was that the sound was randomly fading in and out for sounds that should not be fading in and out. It was especially aggravating for the fading in and out during dialogue sections of movies.

I am glad it all worked out for you and you're truly enjoying your system now. I have no damn clue why some of these Vizio systems have this issue straight out of the box. I was looking into it and no one has figured out how to replicate it. It just randomly happens from the factory or out of the blue after certain brown outs and power outages. The only fix is to reset to default because playing with the back settings doesn't do anything. Annoying, but livable and easily resolved.
This system is excellent value IMO, especially at what you guys are paying. I got mine for $280 back in the day and I thought I got a screaming deal. I still think I'd have a hell of a time upgrading this system for anything less than $500 and it's been 5 years plus I have the older version without the phone app.
Is there any sound bar systems with at least 3 HDMI inputs that someone could recommend? Currently I have an old Pioneer receiver with 5 small Polk speakers, but I'm done with routing speaker wire so I'll be upgrading when we move later this year. I have an Nvidia Shield, PS4, and Switch running through the receiver right now, but I'm having a hard time finding any sound bars under $1000 that have multiple HDMI inputs

What kind of TV do you have? Mine feeds the sound through the soundbar (via HDMI Arc, I think) and I can plug multiple devices into the TV.
I use a powered HDMI switch with everything plugged into the TV. Then the optical out on my TV to the sound bar, works like a charm.
I have a cable box, Roku, Blueray player and an old desktop computer wired up this way. I suppose you could have the switch before the soundbar and use the pass through on the
soundbar if you wanted to do it that way.

Didn’t want to start a new thread but does anyone have any suggestions for techniques to hide a cable box behind a wall mounted tv?
I have 2 TVs I want to get the cable box off the ground and mount behind it, but unsure the best method to do so. One tv is 43” in a corner and the other is a 65” mounted on a flat wall. Any ideas are appreciated.
I haven't tried it, but talking to the Telus installer a while ago he suggested taking a zip tie and attaching it somewhere behind the TV. He said the remote will have no issues. I know those Telus ones are pretty light so I could see it working. Same could possibly work for other cable boxes.

I ended up getting some Velcro and velcroing it to the wall behind the TV.
While the remote still sort of works, It will only work when directed in certain spots. I have slightly adjusted where the TV is (full motion mount) and its been better.

Do you have pretty old cable equipment? Pretty much anything in the last two years from both providers will work the same no matter where the box is placed.

Some advice here. I think it's time to replace my 55 inch panasonic plasma. It's about 10 years old now, and want to replace a 42 inch bedroom plasma that is feeling too small. I was really into this kind of stuff a decade ago, but haven't kept up.
Am I going to be able to live with it? I am wanting a bigger tv than the 55 inch since it's a pretty big room. I've always loved the plasma picture, and get very distracted and annoyed at grey looking blacks, and lack of shadow detail in cheaper LCD tvs when watching movies or HBO/Netflix/etc dramas.
Is the QLED going to be passable in that regard? Or do I really have to spend 2k on an LG OLED?
We got two LG OLEDS and don't regret it. Yes they cost a bit more, but the blacks alone are worth it. If you can afford it, it will be worth it for the 10ish years you will have it.
Go for an older one if you can find something on clearance or sale.

I see a lg b8 65 for 1199. Some reviews talk about motion in sports being a problem. Is that an issue with settings or a fault of OLED that generation?
