Dear Sliver - The CP Advice Thread
So, based on some discussion in this thread: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=141445 I've decided to start a "Dear Sliver" thread. CP users and anyone else can post in the thread and request advice from CP's resident guru of no-nonsense opinions. Those who wish to remain anonymous have 2 choices:
1) PM me. I will post your advice question in the thread and not disclose your name/handle.
2) Email me. If 1) isn't anonymous enough for you (what did you do?!?!) then you can email DearSliverCP@gmail.com from a disposable/anonymous email address and I will post the question to the thread.
Feel free to include an anonymous name to be used. Those are always my favourite part. eg "Jilted in Palm Springs" or "Lonely in Red Deer" etc. If you don't include one, be warned I may make one up of my own accord. (I will respect your anonymity when doing so.)
So get those questions in, this could be Sliver's chance at the big time, and it behooves CP to help him out. (And get help at the same time!)

If only we could somehow restrict his advice to this thread.

Is this with Sliver's blessing, or is this a veiled attempt to pile on a poster and his sometimes off-the-wall opinions?

Not with his blessing, but it isn't a pile on thread either. I hope he takes it in the spirit it's intended, which is only positive. I personally often agree with Sliver (probably more often than the CP average) and sometimes think he's off base. Either way I think he has a unique and interesting perspective, and that this thread could be both useful and fun.

I'm not sure what Sliver's qualifications are and frankly it doesn't really matter.
This thread can potentially be very interesting.

Didn't Sliver say CP was too small for his big advice-giving debut?

He did. I'm hoping he's willing to take it as a stepping stone to a potentially larger audience.

Well first step is identifying the dud animal.

I think this thread might be funnier if we simply ask the questions and then impersonate Sliver answering.

Dear Sliver,
If I think a unnamed poster on a unnamed message board is suffering some degree of undocumented mental health issues, what would be the best way to tell them to maybe think twice about an advice column?
Sincerely,
Old Yeller

Dear Old Yeller,
Thank you for your letter. My advice is simple. You shouldn't start an advice thread. Mental trauma from childhood is a terrible thing, especially when you had to shoot your own dog. Should this happen again, call me and I will be glad to shoot it for you.
Sincerely,
Sliver

Bizaro, I'm taking the thread in the spirit it was intended, so I'm not offended.
That being said - and I hate to kill the fun - I don't think it's a good idea.
First, I'm not going to be able to deliver the kind of entertainment you guys are expecting. My opinions generally aren't that different from yours. You know my big touch points - animals, teachers (when they claim they don't have the best gig ever), etc. I think people will be expecting outrageous replies, but that's not why I want to one day start an advice column. I think my advice will be really good, not wacky like you will expect here. This thread will disappoint.
Another problem is I don't think it's a good idea to focus on one poster like this. CP is a great community, but I think if we start centering threads around one guy/girl, it could become too ego driven, and that's a bit of a put-off for a lot of people, myself included. I like inclusive threads and discussions more. This idea is set up to centre around me and my thoughts, and I don't think that's very valuable to CP.
So, anyway, thanks for starting the thread and putting in the effort to make an email address and stuff. Sorry I'm not going to deliver.

Sliver, in all seriousness, why do you think you advice will be " really good"?
What in your life experience has brought you to this opinion?

I'm surprised you have to ask. I believe my post history speaks for itself.

The fact that I am asking would appear to suggest it doesn't.
It is a serious question.
Why do you believe you would be good at this?
