I can't believe it. I was trying to find this video on the weekend and couldn't find a normal version of it, I was trying to explain to my wife why Johnny 5 was being used as a nickname for an acquaintance. I told her there was a somewhat popular song about it and everything. Now I have the evidence.
The nickname was based on the song, not the movie?

The nickname was Johnny 5, and I knew it was because of the movie. She had never heard of the movie and I thought maybe she'd at least have heard the song at some point because they do still play it on some stations. She is terrible at remembering songs so I thought if I found the video and played it for her she'd 'get it'.

These songs are not in keeping with the rules in the original CoS list but since some others have posted covers recorded for film soundtracks, here are a few of my favourite covers:
From 'Backbeat':
Great Barry White cover from the Afghan Whigs in 'Beautiful Girls':
Jim James and Calexico team up on this Dylan cover for 'I'm Not There'
Great Wilson Pickett cover from 'The Commitments'
From 'Young@Heart', a great Coldplay cover.
Scott Pilgrim vs Clash at Demonhead at Lee's Palace in Toronto - A Metric cover.
This is a semi-cover by James Franco of Britney Spears' Everytime in 'Spring Breakers'
Some more covers from films. Sometimes I'll love a cover not because it's a particularly good version of the song but because it is featured in a memorable scene:
A great scene in Terence Davies' 'Deep Blue Sea'. A cover of Molly Malone.
Another great scene from 'Toni Erdmann':
The wonderful closing scene in 'Before Sunset' (a semi-cover by Julie Delpy of Nina Simone's Just in Time)
Another terrific closing scene, where "The Best of Times" from La Cage Aux Folles is covered:
Another great closing scene featuring Kurt Weill's Speak Low in 'Phoenix'. Spoilered for anyone who hasn't seen this film.
Spoiler!
Pixies cover from 'Observe and Report'. NSFW'ed for excess male frontal nudity.
NSFW!
Cover of You Always Hurt the One You Love on ukulele
I caught up with "A Bigger Splash" last night directed by Luca Guadagnino (of "I Am Love" fame). The song features this great Rolling Stones cover by St. Vincent.
The original version of Emotional Rescue was featured in this great scene early in the film when the primary characters were still happy being in each other's company after a long absence and before the long-festering resentments and jealousies bubbled to the surface.

Caught up with Good Time by the Safdie brothers last night. Very entertaining and solid film even though I did not ultimately buy the premise. Anyway, I heard this Leonard Cohen-esque song during the touching epilogue and final credits sequence. The video for the song is so creepy!
I think it probably classifies as "score", but the Tron: Legacy soundtrack is basically a Daft Punk album. Tell me you don't feel something when the synth comes in at 3:10.
This haunting song is featured prominently in A Ghost Story. It plays twice, the second time after the movie loops back on itself and the song is heard in a whole new light.
