Steal basic necessities, sure. There might be situations where I would look the other way.
TVs are not that (and don't have great resell value since they're so commonplace).
Someone stole an electric leisure vehicle from me last year, without the charger that has a proprietary connector piece - like what a ####ing waste of a theft. I'd prefer they'd have just taken money and cleared out my pantry of food if they were desperate than take something that was a fun past time for me that would be rendered useless after the charge is drained.
I have a hard time sympathizing with dumb thieves who steal #### they don't actually need or can't easily pawn off, but ####s over the victim nevertheless. At that point it's just stealing for the act of it without any kind of usefulness or point. But I guess asking them to be more calculated is kind of a useless axe to grind when these individuals aren't great at using their noggins to begin with.
It doesn't have to be one or the other. I would argue that a big part (maybe the biggest part) of the social breakdown is the ever-increasing chasm between rich and poor, the growing number of poor and the shrinking middle-class.
I've mentioned this before, there is a difference between stealing food and essentials and stealing luxuries.
For instance, if I can steal a $200 iPod...I can afford to sell that to you for $20 or $50...because I never paid for the up-front cost so regardless of what I sell it for, its all profit for me.
So you steal ~$900 worth of stuff, sell it for $500 or whatever, and then rinse, repeat over and over again.

There are many legitimate ways to get basic necessities that don't require shoplifting though like food banks. I remember when my friends dad was a chef at the salvation army, he made amazing food for the shelter.

His desire to see people stolen from aside, this part of his post is important - as the rich consolidate more and more wealth, and a greater number of people have less and less - This is what will lead to societal breakdowns and that's what this growing, organized theft falls under.
The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, society starts to crumble. What you're seeing here is just the beginning of what's coming.
The Home Depot on 16th Ave is now 100% self checkout only. There's an associate / monitor there to help / monitor you, but the last two cashier tills are gone. (Contractor entrance still has one if you really want someone else to scan your stuff)

Good, HD has the best self-checkouts by far. A wireless scanner gun makes things so much easier, everything stays in the cart and even with a ####load of stuff I'm out the door in a minute or two

We don't have Home Depot here but I love the wireless scanner at Ikea. As you said makes things so simple.
Home Depot asks you if you want to print or email receipt after you've paid which is good since they remember your email address tied to your credit card.
At other self checkouts I have to punch in my email afterwards by hand on touchscreen and its super slow and annoying.
I prefer email reciepts as it makes future returns easier.

Oh, that's good to know. I never choose that option because I don't want to waste time typing it in.

Pretty cool series of videos from someone who's created bait packages to lure in thieves. From the appearance of the thieves, none of them appear to be desperate people stealing for reasons of survival. They are all part of crime groups that sell to fences.
I don't choose that because I don't want them spamming me forever.
I haven't really experienced HD spamming too much (but maybe they sell our info to someone else). Personally I use it all the time. I like that it makes things easier for returns, as well as being good for business expense tracking, since you don't need to keep around paper receipts that fade by tax time anyway.

Returns are easy either way. And if you have lost your receipt and paid with your credit card, you can make a return as well. They just scan the item and your credit card, and if you actually paid for it, the purchase will show at their end.
