I don’t know what segments you’re listening to, but the NHL certainly is not one of them from any of his broadcasts.

I assure you the GG interview is more about a stick throw than actual hockey and the Calgary Flames.

Rome is a hack and a waste of 3 hours of air time in the radio.
This is so out of touch...

The smackoff btw is one day of the year, you can easily avoid it if you don’t get the humour.

Rome, especially in playoff time, talks a lot of hockey. Has big names on (Crosby, getzlaf, pronger, etc) and typically has captivating interviews. Hell, he had ferland on in 2015

Unfortunately, the audio quality from Gulutzan isn't great.

The email from a fan at the start was great.

Just caught the end. Was there anything worth hearing in the first ten minutes? If so, what as it ?

I liked the segment where they were talking about the 'emotional bank'

They make sure the players know they care about them - celebrating achievements, making sure their family are taken care of at the games, celebrating birthdays etc. so when they need to push the players, they know where they're coming from. Mostly about instilling a good culture in the locker room.

Also with winning games talked about enjoying wins too not just always being on their heels.

I understand many dont like the guy and i dont listen all that often myself, but he is a big NHL fan himself, and works it into his show somewhat regularly.

He is polarizing and certainly not everyones cup of tea. He is, as i mentioned earlier, considered one of the best interviewers in the business ( I agree..he asks very tough questions all the time) and super knowledgeable about what he speaks. He gets the best guests going as well.

The other thing he is, is one of the single most successful guy at sports talk radio ever. Hacks do not pull in 30 million dollars a year to talk sports 3 hours a day.
People don't like his voice but Ferrall has NHL stuff every night and it's often 1/2 the show.

As mentioned, Ferrall is impossible to listen to, so he doesn't count.

That's the dude! I turned on Fan960 one night and he was on and I couldn't believe what I was listening to. Probably the worst voice in radio. I had to turn it off, it made my skin crawl to listen to him.

I thought the same the first time I heard him. But it grows on you. I love that show now. He has a pretty good sense of humor too.

Yeah I like Farrell as well...yes he mentions hockey a lot, but i was more meaning about actual guests and interviews. Rome, by a mile, gets more in depth than anyone else in his position.

He often has Eddie Olcyzk on as a guest and its a must listen every time. Those interviews have waned quite a bit the last year because of Eddies current battle, but he will be back and if you want honest and intellectual hockey talk, its hard to beat.

As for the Rome/GG segment, I thought it was top notch. He didnt even mention the stick toss until well into the piece and even then it was in context with getting guys attention when needed and led into the (as described above) "emotional account" he opens with all his players.

It was pretty clear that when he did snap and go javelin thrower that day, it was directed at his veterans almost entirely. That was interesting and he also mentioned they responded which is a magnificent sign about how close the club is as a whole.

The smackoff is a bracket type competition of idiots trying to sound cool.. but simply sound like.. well.. idiots. It is a everyday rehash of segments of smackoff from the past as well as what is upcoming. Every damn day..

I’m out of touch because I think he is a waste of time and air space? Ok “Pot”..

Everyone gets a turn and then they rank them based on how good the call is.

Rome is like every other radio show. Sometimes okay, sometimes insufferable. I do appreciate his occasional forays into the NHL, but I must admit, he's not always on my radio. What I do like about him, is he doesn't go into threads clearly marked 'subject x' and talks about how he hates subject x like some sweat-browed, butt-clenched future heart attack victim with a cool alt-opinion that must so desperately be spoken aloud to educate the poor, naïve pleebs.

Good interview with our coach, and I really appreciate Flames hockey brought to other markets.

You have it entirely wrong..it isnt one person against another.

It's wide open to those allowed to participate. Those are that are invited get those invites by having good calls during the year, or by being former winners/invitees.

The winner is chosen by Rome.
