They are closer to the 5th OA pick than they are to 12TH.

Since they traded Hanifin, they have the 3rd worst record in the NHL, with a .267 P% - only SJS and ANA have been worse.

The point is they're still going with that veteran lineup... which means they're still valuing winning meaningless games over getting the kids some all-important experience.

I don't even know why people would argue this. There is literally zero benefit to playing Markstrom. Winning these games does nothing for his trade value, but losing them (these are "no pressure" games) would hurt is value. It also risks injury etc etc.

For what? So we can close out the year on a winning streak and convince everyone we don't need to rebuild and, in doing so, tank a really good opportunity to draft someone halfway decent?

This shouldn't even be a discussion. I can imagine why anybody connected to this team (directly or as a fan) would want Markstrom playing any of these remaining games.

^ TBF it is a back to back and unlikely that Wolf would play both even with such minimal travel but I understand the concern.

I could see Wolf playing out the remaining games.

Winning even 3 of these last 5 games puts us in the 80s.

BUF only has 3 games left... WSH, FLA and TBL.
NYJ only has 3 games left... TOR, PHI and NYI
SEA has 5 games left... Incl DAL, STL, WIN and MIN

Those 3 teams, each tied at 79 points, are all that stands between us and dropping out of the top 10... and we get to play ANA, ARI and SJS, while the three teams above us are all playing against top teams or teams still fighting for a playoff spot.

If the Flames win every remaining game and the teams above them lose every remaining game, the Flames will finish 20th overall and draft 13th (pending the lottery).

But sure, keep obsessing over that 15th-overall pick that happens every year in your fevered imagination.

Yeah that's a fair point I didn't realize. Still don't know why Backlund, Huberdeau, Mangiapane and Kadri are playing. Wranglers have already clinched, and I don't think we've used our call ups.

Anyway... I'm done ranting now. lol

You can't just shut everyone down if they are healthy.

Anybody who is injured or has a nagging injury won't play.

They traded all the UFAs

They are playing Wolf and Markstrom 50/50.

And they are the worst team in the NHL over the last 10 games (.200 point percentage is 32nd behind Philly).

I'm not quite sure what the complaint is. Honestly I think dressing veterans with nothing to play is probably better than dressing young guys with something to prove.

Guarantee those young guys try a lot harder than these vets will.

Cant wait for the Flames to lose the majority of the final games, finish 7th, have the lottery draw go to position #9 and watch some users go apoplectic over this "stupid, garbage" franchise not winning one or two more games against the bottom feeders and being in the lottery-winning position.

That's $5750.00 for both of us.

If I wanted to buy two tickets to the QMJHL Cape Breton Eagles game tomorrow night which right next door:

$31,368

I always have a moral dilemma if it's worth seeing family & friends back in the Maritimes when it's cheaper to fly to Europe at times.

It's a figure of speech. Sometimes we draft 12th, sometimes we draft 14th, sometimes we draft 11th, sometimes we draft 13th... and yes, sometimes we draft 15th.

You know where we don't draft? In the top 3. Do you know why? Because you can't move up to the top 3 from outside the top 11. (I mean, we never win the lottery anyway, but even if we did.)

Feels like a lot still to watch this Flames team.

Seems like there are cheaper flights to New York...go watch hockey and baseball and not subject yourself to Flames vs Coyotes...and save money while doing it.

The Flames' last 10 earned first-round picks by position:

2023: 16th
2022: 26th (traded to Montreal)
2021: 13th
2020: 19th (traded down to 24th to pick Zary)
2019: 26th
2018: 12th (traded to NY Islanders)
2017: 16th (of 31; made the playoffs that year)
2016: 6th
2015: 15th (of 30; made playoffs; traded to Boston)
2014: 4th

Seven years out of ten, their pick was NOT in the 11-15 range you mentioned. And in one of the other three, the team made the playoffs and won a round.

You could until recently. So what?

I suppose you want to blame the Flames' management for not winning the lottery, too.

Or else you're just determined to have something to mope about, even if you have to make it up yourself.

Dude, what are you even on about? You literally just proved the point, which is that we either lose in the first round and draft outside the top 15 or we don't make the playoffs at all and draft 11-15 (except for two seasons).

You know what happened in the two seasons we drafted in the top 10? We got Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk. If you go back one more year to 2013, we drafted 6th and got Sean Monahan.

So...

Drafting top 10 = good.
Missing the playoffs and drafing outside the top 10 = not as good.
Losing in the first round and drafting outside the top 15 = bad.

I don't even know what your argument is... it's like you tried to prove me wrong by... proving me right?

Play young guys more and give them important role.
3-2 loss will be perfect.
I would like try Coronato with Zary.
Sharky - Zary - Coronato
Huber - Kadri - Pospisil
Mangi - Backlund - Hunt

Disagree.

He wants to play and he's your starting goalie and a very valuable asset with a full NMC.

You keep him happy.

The Flames can't move around much any way in the standings.
