If Smith is the starter though, I really think Gillies should back him up. Too many goalies in Stockton and he's cheaper than any other options. Keep the net position at least relatively inexpensive so we can spend on filling other roster holes.

Smith is at least a proven #1 who plays the puck very well; he will help our D immensely. Anything was better than Elliott

I can get on board with this if:
1) Acquisition cost is low
2) It means Rittich gets the backup gig

Why though? I would rather keep Elliott

Well, that probably explains their place in the standings. Dude was not that good even in his heyday and is 35 years old now.
Frankly I've seen more than enough "stop gap" solutions already. This is a heartbreaker.

Meh. Smith is fine. Stopgap until one of our prospects is ready. Could still add Raanta or Mason for a tandem approach, neither are proven really anyway, but it could even end up that Smith becomes a mentor / backup... Don't love the contract so hopefully the yotes are retaining some or taking something back

Smith has proven he can handle a #1 workload.
Moose hasn't.

Maybe BT worked in a deal with that 3rd round pick with stone aswell. I wanted smith last year, I'm all for giving him a a go this year. I wouldn't doubt BT going for raanta as well so if smith falters we have another decent back up.

Meh, we've seen how goalies from defensive teams have played after they joined an other team with a more loose playing style, lets see.

There were many nights where Smith provided top notch goaltending, but failed to get any goal support. The Coyotes bleed offense compared to what they generate, honestly I think hes a major improvement on Elliot.

...those of us overreacting are going to eat crow on this one I believe. He's a good goalie, and has put bad teams on his back and carried the load. This is another baby step forward for the goalies while keeping the door wide open for our prospects.

Yotes try to play defensive but they are really poor. Smith faces a lot of shots, and high quality one nightly.
