A distinction: any arena funds from #yyccc would be from capital grants which can ONLY be used to build stuff. The current tax hubbub and service cuts (also on Monday's agenda) come from operational funds, which are completely different and funded by taxes.
In the last iteration (July 2017) of the deal, the funding for the City's $175m cash contribution was from leftover funding from previous infrastructure grants identified during Infrastructure Calgary process.
|
So where does the City get capital grants from? Do these come from the provincial or federal governments with the mandate they be spend on "building stuff?"

The provincial government. It's money already allocated by the province and must be spent on infrastructure, and I believe it's also a "use it or lose it" source of funding, so if you're not building, you're not getting the money.

... and does that money cover absolutely everything that the city builds or will build? Because if it doesn't then all this is doing is making the city pay for 600M worth of other stuff out of a different pool of money.

As long as we don't call it the CP Dome. That will attract an entirely different crowd... and maybe even some certain high-ranking US politicians...

For one, the city is not fronting the total cost of 600M. I'm not sure what their total would be, but previous proposals have listed their contribution at about 1/4 to 1/3 of that.
Secondly, probably not. There are likely multiple grants being used, some of which may get as specific as designating it to be spent on recreation facilities or some other thing the arena fits into. Regardless, it would have to be grants that are specifically for building something, so you could not use them to buy land, buy vehicles, etc.
Plus, "pay for another 600M worth of other stuff out of a different pool of money" is not how budgets work. They have a budget, they'll fit this into that budget, or they wont. They will not simply spend an extra 150-200M.

The one thing I'll miss about the Saddledome is that no matter whose corporate name was on the building, it was always still just the Saddledome.
I hate how often these building's name get changed now.
My favourite is the arenas in Buffalo and Philadelphia. They both opened in 1996 and both are on their 4th different name since opening, but they've both had the same corporate naming sponsor the whole time it's just that they've just been sold to different parents who keep changing their company names.

I don't what's worse - The US where the most ridiculous sounding companies get arena/stadium naming rights, or Canada where were on pace for every single arena and stadium to be Scotiabank or Rogers.

7 arenas in Canada: 2 Rogers, 2 Scotiabank, 2 Bell and 1 that used to be Scotiabank.
Nothing wrong with that.
Since Canadian Tire dipped their toe in the naming rights pool in Ottawa, I'm expecting the new arena in Calgary to be named after Sport Chek or Mark's.
