Anyone know why Korean Air 9234 came out of Calgary today? Boeing 747-8 flew over my house this morning. I'm far enough south that the planes don't make much noise but I think this one woke me up so I had to check what it was.

Live horse shipments to Japan, to become horse shashimi.
Yup. We have the good horse charters and the not so good horse charters (from the perspective of being a horse). The early AM departures to Japan are not the good kind.
So, just curious but can all modern planes be flown manually? Or do they need to have some computer assistance? I am thinking of the recent problems with the 737 Max in particular. Could the pilots just turn off the computers and fly the plane? Thanks.

Yes Indeed.
It it is common for many pilots to hand fly their aircraft in certain situations. In busy air traffic corridors where you are frequently being vectored and moved up or down by ATC you typically rely on automation. Many companies also have requirements within their SOP's that mandate the use of automation by the flight crew in many situations.
The 2013 Asiana Flight 214 crash in SFO is a great study of what happens when an experienced air crew become so reliant on cockpit automation that they could not hand fly a fairly basic visual approach when the ILS was down on RWY 28L.

Hit the McKnight lottery nicely yesterday. East bound on McKnight coming to the airport, had the Disney themed WestJet plane landing in perfect view as I passed through the lights at Barlow, then an Air Canada flight directly overhead as I passed the runway.
Feels good, man.

Sure did, but they are still hella impressive to see in person. Landing at CDG a few weeks back seeing a row of 5 of them with Air France at a terminal, crazy.

I happened to be on an A380 on a flight to Paris many years ago. That thing had the smoothest lift-off and landing I've ever experienced. It was like landing on the the softest, fluffiest cloud one can imagine. Very impressive.
