What are the confirmed cap hits for both players

Lucic = $6,000,000 minus $600,000 retained = $5,400,000
Neal = $5,750,000
Plus the oilers retain $600,000

pure cap hits:
Neal is $5.75
Lucic is $6 million
If the 10% retention is correct the effective cap hits become
Oilers: James Neal $6.35 mil ($5.75 + $0.6 for retaining on Lucic)
Flames: Lucic $5.4 mil

2.6M for the next 4 years, and an additional 2M for the following 2 years, of dead cap-space on Neal and Lucic. Not that much better ha.

We get a downgrade in hockey ability and skill. Not a major one, as Neal isn't a big loss - filling his spot with Lucic does lower our floor from a hockey/skill perspective.
But maybe that's something we can absorb? It's undeniable we get a big toughness boost, and maybe that will have a greater positive impact than the negative one felt from the skill downgrade.
If Neal was a problem for the coach and his teammates as some have suggested, that might also give us an unmeasurable gain - hard to quantify that impact but it's worth considering when weighing all this.
I need to know more before I can take much of a stance on this

Not sure paying an extra 350k a year is that significant. If Neal averages 35 points a year on their second line it is probably almost a wash compared to what Lucic brings. Still a terrible contract but it would be a small improvement commiserate with the extra 0.4 percent cap hit.

Boa 2019 is going to be ####ed. Lucic will play the toothfairy with Neal while Talbot and Smith collide at center ice opening up a black hole that swallows Rogers place and their piss stained blade runner district.

Even if everything washes out the Oilers get out of jail a year earlier with the Neal contract. Not that that matters as I expect both players will be bought out prior to their deals expiring.

I was hoping JP would be included. There probably was something to the Neal + Bennett for Lucic + JP thing. That would have caused riots.

The Neal and Lucic contracts expire the same off season. July 2023.

Need one of those "big win" feel-good trades to offset this and losing Hathaway.
This off-season has been dogshirt man.

Uh, 0.4 percent cap hit? You mean 6 per cent? Or what do you mean?
And if Neal averages 35 points on the second line, sure it's not that bad given they got out of Lucic's contract. But that's a big if given his play last year. He sucked and brought down everyone he played with. If he played like last year, outside of playing with McDavid, he isn't breaking 25 points...

Slowest finalization of a trade including two of the slowest players in the league.
Coincidence?

If Neal was a free agent this year he would be able to sign a modest deal in a number of teams.
If Lucic was a free. Agent this year he’d be playing for rubbles in the Motherland.

Look on the bright side! At least we didn’t sign James Neal this summer! That dude was born an Oiler.
