I mean it's obvious that Jarome Iginla never had a player even close to Johnny Gaudreau on his line. Every opposition player keyed in on Iginla, he would fight through it and make something happen. Johnny Gaudreau is the player that gets keyed on now. Monahan has benefitted on that and the vision on Gaudreaus passes. To not recognize what a huge difference that
one fact alone makes a real comparison hard to gauge.
To his credit Monahan definitely has an elite release and accuracy to his shot. If it's anywhere in his wheelhouse he is going to make the most of it. Johnny can get it there sometimes in ridiculous fashion. Monahan knows to always be ready. It's great chemistry. Unfortunately good coaching and tight checking by Colorado nullified him in the playoffs. Where Jarome would have powered through, Monahan simply doesnt have the natural drive, compete or physical style to play a series in that way.

2 out of the 3 "tangibles" you say Monahan does not have is false.
The only 1 he doesn't match up to Iggy in is Physical style. To say Monny doesn't have drive or compete in him is frankly insulting. If he had no drive or compete he would have clocked out at his first hernia. Or the first time his wrist was shattered. Or sat out the playoffs with a broken thumb. He's not a dominant hulk like Iggy was, no. But so many around here are selling the man short by a lot.

I wonder if some people are misreading the title of this thread, "Sean Monahan vs Jarome Iginla," as "Sean Monahan is Jarome Iginla."
That one letter might explain a lot.

I'm as critical of Monahan's playoff performance as anyone, but expecting him to be anything like Iginla isn't fair either.
Monahan just needs to figure out how to be a better Monahan and show up at all times of the season.
|
In a hyperbolic back and forth this is the most on point post. There is a lot to defend in Monahan's game, but the man himself said he needs to come back a different player next season.
He understands there's something missing from his game if he wants to be a number one centre on a strong playoff team as opposed to a statistical number one centre. I'm really excited for how he plays next season.

No need to get defensive.
I wasn't meaning your thread is pointless, just meant that most people are comparing them in a way that's unfair to Monahan and puts him in a no win situation.
I'm aware that you didn't paint it that way when you started the thread and that you started this before the terrible end of season Monahan had which changed the dialogue a lot.

I don't think that anyone is suggesting that Monahan is better than Iginla at same stage and will be at end of career but the fact that there are many comparables and we have Monahan signed long term on a good contract is a big win for the Flames the next few seasons as we hopefully move to be a contender.
I still think that Monahan is one of the most underrated players in the NHL.

Marc Savard was close, I'd say. Oddly, it wasn't until he was replaced by Conroy that Iggy scored 50.

Whenever I think of 24-year-old Iggy playing today on a line with Johnny and Monny, I’m reminded of just how cruel time really is.
