Because Brodie has sucked for two years and doesn't have a bunch of value on his own?

According to Michael Russo of the Athletic (Wild beat writer), multiple sources say the Flyers are gearing up to potentially trade Simmonds.

.@Senators & @NHLFlames News: I’m told that the #Sens & #Flames are working on a deal. The names of D TJ Brodie & RW Mark Stone keep coming up, not too sure if those will be the moving pieces. More to come.
apparently he got the Hoffman trade right ... so (crosses fingers)

He was correct about Jagr and kept beating that drum until it happened so its a cut above just fluff. unless this has been debunked since.

Any one of Panarin, Simmonds or Stone would upgrade the team incredibly.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Panarin/Simmonds/Stone

Like a good chunk of eastern European forwards, Panarin plays on his off wing.

Do not pay that asking price - perfect sell high scenario for the Flyers. Flames would be potentially in a Troy Brouwer 2.0 scenario with him - especially since he needs a new big contract. His production comes from playing with Giroux and Voracek on the PP - at ES he's pretty much Brouwer pre-Calgary.

Brouwer before Calgary:
15/16: 39 pts in 82 games - 29 ES points (30 years old)
14/15: 42 pts in 82 games - 27 ES points (29 years old)
Simmonds last two seasons
17/18: 54 pts in 82 games - 28 ES points (29)
16/17: 46 pts in 75 games - 27 ES points (28)
Don't over pay for a guy who is going to be on the wrong side of 30, whose numbers are inflated because he plays for a great PP with talented linemates - much like Brouwer was in Washington and St.Louis.
This isn't the 24-27 year old Simmonds who was a physical force and drove play - much more limited in his skill set now and slowing down from a skating perspective.

Simmonds also played well against Calgary historically, leading fans to overvalue him (also similar to Brouwer).

Simmonds is 29, by the time the next season starts he'll be 30 and on the final year of his contract. By the time his extension kicks in he will be 31.
A 31 year old power forward with declining numbers and who will be looking to get paid until he's 36/37 for the production he put up while being 25-30.
Big time risky.

I think stone is the best player of those currently. Adding a player that produces near Gaudreaus clip to go with Tkachuk on your second line is how you make a real difference to your offense. That would be having a line 1a and 1b. Then you just need Bennett and Jankowski to round into good bottom six forwards. Won't need them to be saviors at that point, and if either of them can show they're better than that then it's just gravy.

Wow! Adding Stone would be incredible but I don't see why the Sens would want to trade him? Seems like a guy who can be part of the solution for them.

Also the least likely to be available though.
Ottawa is a tire fire but he's the big piece at forward they would likely want to build around.
They'd likely covet him the way we would Johnny.
There's talk the other two may be on the move, but nothing saying Stone is available (unless he wants out which there's been no talk of).

Stone is pretty underrated IMO. If the Flames can snag him for a Brodie + Bennett package, you take that and run.
Stone reminds me of Scheifele and as a winger that feels like a very comfortable move that solves the Flames need short term and long term. Essentially it would be similar to the Dougie trade. Which I think nobody regrets at all.
If BT is in discussions for the guy you need to make it happen while he's available.
