More importantly they can basically guarantee a top 6 role I'd imagine.

And guarantee being a bottom feeder team in the league for the next 5 years.

I think the Flames could sell him the possibility of a 4th or 3rd line role if Frolik is traded in the offseason.

Meh. I'd be more interested if he was a righty.

I can’t even tell who he plays for. The ads in that league are ridiculous.

Nygård plays for Färjestad BK of the SHL.

I see nothing but "meh" in Nygard, let him sign in Edmonton as the next great winger for McDavid

Jesse Virtanen is on the same team, is a defenseman, and has more points.
Almost the same age. I wonder if he is getting looks as well?

Joining a team that is built to 'win now', with a potential spot in the line-up, with a bunch of Swedes that will help him transition, with a legend in Loob in the organization.... suddenly the Flames start looking like a much more attractive landing spot than Ottawa, even if it looks like he has to work a bit harder to earn a spot.

Frolik will most likely be traded this upcoming off-season, and though you can't expect a guy like Nygard to come in and fill that hole completely (Frolik is so underrated and effective at smothering the other team on the forecheck and backcheck), at least he is a strong step in that direction to filling it. Losing Frolik will hurt the team speed as well, not to mention the consistent shift-by-shift effort/tenacity he brings.

Flames can also dangle that carrot explicitly, saying he will get a shot playing with Backlund, and point to how Backlund has helped many players over-achieve (Bouma, Colborne, arguably Bennett and Tkachuk in their respective rookie seasons, though it is obvious that Tkachuk and Backlund are more symbiotic right now than anything). Czarnik chose to sign here when the Flames dangled the Johnny Gaudreau/Sean Monahan carrot (as well as taking the time to meet him face-to-face).

Calgary has had a fairly strong track record of signing FAs lately that were at least somewhat highly touted with multiple teams showing interest. Calgary is an attractive market to play in at the moment.

Agent echos what Dreger is saying. More than 20 teams interested with Ottawa and Calgary being the most persistent. Agent also says that he has never had a player with so much NHL interest.

plugging a guy in on an ELC next year would be fantastic. Chucky will be 9aav and we need to sign Rittich (who will want 4aav given that ridiculous Koskinen signing).

I doubt Rittich gets that much money without a Conn Smyth victory.

This is a RFA and Treliving we are talking about here.

I know. Was being sarcastic as the team is one big tire fire right now.

But yeah, easiest road to the show is on a bottom feeder

Small update but looks like the Flames are still in on this.

15. Player to watch at the world championships: Sweden’s Joakim Nygard. The 26-year-old left-shot winger still intends to play in the NHL next season. He’s going to select three-to-five contenders to narrow his choices, before picking the right fit. Calgary and Ottawa were among the expected short list.

with the euro free agents we are going after I really feel like Treliving makes another big draft day splash this year, even a couple potentially.

Brodie will he traded as well as Frolik and I do feel that if he’s able to include a young asset along with Neal we could see him traded as well. Should be fun to watch this offseason!
