Could also be intel that US allies are worried about American dithering and are seriously considering their own nuclear deterrence. Imagine the tension in the NATO sphere if Poland independently developed its own nukes? I imagine several nations would leave on the spot and others like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and all their adversaries would consider that a green light to develop their own.

Does anyone else find it a little terrifying these drones can literally hunt people down, there's no hiding and you basically never see it coming?

I'm not sure if I would brag about the 'biggest ever donation of military aid' if its a pathetic $650 million when the US just sent billions and isn't even on the same continent.

Especially if I were the 5th biggest world economy.

As someone who is not participating in the illegal invasion of a sovereign state...no this does not worry me at all.

Not in the context of war. Most things that will kill you in a modern war is something you won't see coming, be it an artillery piece, a mine, a sniper, a cruise missile, or a drone.

Beyond that... absolutely. The terrifying thing about drones is that they're so cheap. They're already being used by large criminal organizations like the Mexican cartels, giving them massively increased possibilities, essentially air power on the cheap, and drones will probably very quickly be used by every drug gang in the world, one way or another.

They also give various authoritarian police forces new powers, and of course they make it possible for terrorists to reach whole new categories of targets.

AI will be useful to help analyze 3D spaces and use predictive analysis to defend against drone swarms. As good as drones are, there will be rapid and vast development of defenses against them. Warring factions would do good to target their enemy's supply chain, much like Ukraine is doing against Russia with their oil production facilities using . . . . drone swarms.

They are the future of war. Get yourself a good bunker.

Yup, new weapons, new countermeasures.

We'll probably see machineguns making a comeback, in air defense, as there's something for them to shoot at now... again. And they're also cost effective, which is important. Bullets are a lot cheaper than air defense missiles.

On the scifi end of the spectrum, energy weapons are also back on the development menu, both targeted "lasers" and microwaves. Those are weapon categories which also kind of lacked a good target type, but you can target whole swarms of drones at once with a microwave weapon, and lasers don't run out of ammo no matter how many drones you throw at them.

Wonder if there's an EMP type of weapon out there; one that you can aim at a swarm of drones and disable their electrical systems with a single focused blast.

At least try to keep up to Canada.

“ Military Donations
Since the beginning of 2022, Canada has committed $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. This funding will allow Canada to deliver military assistance to Ukraine through to 2029.

We continue to actively look at what more we can do to support Ukraine. Minister Blair remains in close contact with Ukrainian officials through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, and on a bilateral basis.”

Nice list of donated military equipment. From missle systems to gas masks.

I've never really thought about it, but I always thought that EMPs act as a bomb expanding from a central point, and not something you can focus.

The result would be the same, but way less control.

Perun made a video about this topic, it's worth checking out. Talks about EMP:s too, IIRC. Pretty sure they'rea thing already.

(I don't usually "watch" these, I just listen to the audio like it was a podcast. The slides are never that essential.)

Mark Rober just posted a video about taking down drones. Basically there are counter drones that can knock them out of the sky.

Then we just need fighter drones to escort the bomber drones and dogfight the counter drones

Compare / contrast this to the Alberta politics thread.

A little over 5,000 less replies yet 200,000 more views. Hilarious.

Canada's commitment only really exposes the hypocrisy and sheer stupidity of the EU and UK in general.

Serious but not serious. Are they still buying gas & other industrial equipment from Russia? And complaining that Ukraine is targeting Russian energy infrastructure? What a joke.

Canada has given 0.32% of it's GDP to Ukraine.
Estonia has given 4.14%. This is not the same.

Poland has given 1.32%.
Finland has given 1.29%.
Germany has given 1.06%
Spain has given 0.9%
Italy has given 0.67%
UK has given 0.55%.

There's 17 European countries that have given more bilateral aid to Ukraine than Canada, relative to GDP, and of course bilateral aid is just on top of what EU countries have already given through EU.
