Brent Burns at#1 is a joke, he should be below Gio and Hedman. Josi is too low, switch him with Karlsson.

Hmmm, so the clear cut #1 D this past season, who won the best D award, comes in 3rd place.
Ok.

I think Hedman's clearly the best in the league. To be ranked just behind him is terrific. Gio's finally getting his due.
I agree that Burns is way too high. Writers seem to be unable to take his point totals in context. Same with Reilly, really.

One year versus overall. I'd take Hedman for Gio in a trade easily despite my huge Gio fandom. Not Burns though.

Is the knock against Gio that he's old? Cuz Burns is 34, so...

The Athletic had an article a couple of months ago that said Doughty had the second worst contract in the league, and that he was a replacement level player last year from an advanced stats standpoint. I thought that was really interesting, and not something I've seen talked about on CP. Was Doughty that bad last year?
This list really seems to be based on past reputation more than anything else. Burns, Karlsson, Doughty, Letang, Subban, Trouba all probably higher than they should be. At least one of the Carolina guys should be on there.

IMO Hedman is the top D-man in the league currently. It is good to see Giordano get his due and respect. Wasn't he left off the list all together last year? Shows that these lists mean little to nothing though.

Not sure why anyone is balking at a #3 rank for Gio. Hes getting his due, good for him.

Just from a Jets bias but watching Josh Morrisey the past few years he is much better than Trouba. Ever since he got hurt Trouba hasn't been the same.

Agreed. I wonder where he'd have ranked absent the Norris.

Pietrangelo at 11 is the real egregious one. He's a beast.

I would agree with having Hedman #1. I'm fine with where Gio is, it's more having Burns at #1. He's not all that great defensively, and you would think playing defense would weigh pretty heavily when grading defensemen, but I think we all know that's not really how it works. But even worse is Karlsson at #4, he has just fallen off way too much to be ahead of some of those guys. As dissentowner mentioned basically switching Josi and Karlsson would be a good fix.

I admittedly don't watch much Jets hockey, but Trouba hasn't really impressed me the last few years, whereas Morrisey seems like he's just starting to really come into his own, and he's considerably better.

hey... maybe if gio would have been good enough to get an invite to the all star game that would have put him over the top?

I understand that argument, but they release this list every year. It’s a right now list and the fact that the nearly unanimous Norris winner isn’t #1 is a farce.

I'm not exactly outraged with the rankings as winning the Norris shouldn't be an automatic pedestal to the top. But Burns at #1 just doesn't sit well with me. He's with out a doubt the #1 defenseman in terms of pure offensive output no doubt. He's a juggernaut on one side of the ice.
But I don't think he's in the same league defensively as Gio who is elite on both ends of the ice. Burns isn't even on the 1st unit PK. Vlasic and Braun are. I don't think Hedman is on the 1st unit PK either. Taking both ends of the ice into account, Gio should definitely be the #1 choice. Hopefully another year of dominance makes him a slam dunk next off season.

I can't grasp why people get so worked up about these rankings. Is it not good enough that Gio is being recognized as one of the top 3 players at his position in the entire league?
The NHL is quite clear that they are taking more than just last season into account, and if you do so as well, it is more than fair that Gio is 3rd on the list.
