Default CBC is Fubar

I have regular cable, CBC has all kinds of noise and distortion (ch.5 is also this way). This wouldn't matter except for HNIC. It only has distortion on my 52" Plasma, not on my 13" and 32" tube tv's. Can anybody help out with this?? I got a cable signal amplifier and it made the signal worse on all tv's.

Is CBC going digital soon? That should help!

Weird. Couldn't find much on that kind of problem.

This might prove helpful... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...4091746AAmSwbn

Channel 5 and 6 are the worst channels for signal quality because of where they lie in the spectrum. Why are you watching HNIC in SD? If you don't have an HD package, pay the $3 for the eastern time shift package and watch HNIC on CBC Ontario which is at least a digital signal.

I don't think any channel under 50 can ever go digital IIRC.

Actually every channel on Shaw is broadcast in digital. It's that those under ~50 are broadcast in both formats. The new HDPVRs do not have an analog tuner in them, but still get the lower channels.

Call Shaw, and ask them if the entry level cable box tunes in those lower channels in digital. I think it does. Then go out and spend $55 on it.

It is possible to get the digital feed on those lower channels without buying the box. It just requires a special code being added to your account. This means that you won't see the tv listings channel (Ch 2), but the rest should have a lot better sound and picture quality.

I saw this on the Digital Home forum a while back.. I'll see if I can find that thread and code again.

I don't have that digital box, nor do I want to give Shaw any more money.

Do you have a digital tuner in your TV, like calculoso suggested?

This can work for any digital box, not only the cheap one. I have an older SD box and a newer HD box, and have this code working on my account no problem.

EDIT: ahh.. but it doesn't look like you have a digital box. You may be out of luck unfortunately.

Sometimes a television, vcr, radio, or splitter can act like an antenna, causing more ingress than normal on your system. If you have multiple devices connected to cable in your house, try disconnecting them one at a time, while watching the problem channel. If the problem disappears, you've found the problem device. I used to have my vcr and my stereo connected to my cable, and I had the same problem until I disconnected them.

I once had a bad coax going from my cable outlet to my TV. On CBC (Ch.6) when the coax was acting up I would get some radio station interfering with the audio on CBC. It would pretty much drown it out. I'd have to jiggle the cable to get rid of it and eventually I replaced it and it disappeared.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I do hear some kind of weird radio interference. I'll try replacing the coax from the tv to the wall.

That radio interference is possibly Shine FM 88.9 MHz. Channel 6 on tv goes from 82 MHz to 88 MHz, with the audio carrier at 87.75MHz. It is possible for low frequncy fm to interfere with channel 6, and vice versa. This used to be very useful where I live, as CBC used to be channel 6 over the air. This made it possible to pick up Hockey Night In Canada on an fm radio.

It was a bad coax cable.

Is it possible for me to buy any kind of 'digital box' and get these digital channels without calling shaw or paying extra (other than buying the box at future shop)?

All this work, shaw would have come out and do for free. Signal Amplifier, cabling, ensuring the splitters are done properly, etc. I've had them out a number of times, and they take care of it all, and you don't pay for a thing. The cables that I have that the Shaw guy put together are by FAR the best quality cables I have, and I think I still have a amplifier that shaw gave me too, because I think there's a different one in my house now.

You can rent a box from shaw for 2.95 a month, I don't know if that one will meet all your needs. You won't get the digital channels on top of the basic channels without paying for them.
