Default 2018 College Free Agents

With Treliving trading away quite a few high round picks in the upcoming drafts, he will look to offset their loss. One way to do that is college free agents. College free agents are cheap assets that cost the organization only an ELC.

Being able to attract good college free agents also allows for riskier draft picks. For example, a team can afford to take more boom and bust prospects in the NHL draft if they can get steady stream of college guys to fill out the roster and provide depth.

With the Flames log jam in goal and defence through the organization, I think it would be hard to attract any free agents in those position unless the Flames do an extremely good job of selling the organization and/or the player doesn't have many options.

The Flames are starting to get thin on forward prospects, especially at the AHL level. With many of Stockton's centers and wingers graduating to the NHL and most of the others they might let go, the Flames will probably have an easier time attracting forward free agents.

At time of posting the Flames are at 46 NHL contracts, so it is possible for them to burn a year of an ELC for a few free agents if they decide to do so.

D Daniel Brickley 22 y/o 6'3'' 205lbs shoots L junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=216251
Was one of the more sought after college free agents last season.
Quote:
A native of Sandy, Utah, Brickley returned to school to finish his degree, which he will do in just three years. The reigning WCHA Player of the Year will garner a ton of interest because of his size and offensive ability from the blue line. Brickley is still maturing in his own zone, but because he hasn’t reached his ceiling, NHL organizations will covet him that much more. Brickley has the agility to sidestep forecheckers on the breakout, despite not having the best speed.

D Zach Whitecloud 21 y/o 6'2'' 209lbs shoots R sophomore
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=202774
Will be highly sought after.
Had invites from 29 teams for 2017 development camps but attended the Kings'
Was on the radar for Canada's olympic team being picked for the Karjala cup
All around solid d-man that shoots R and no blaring weaknesses.
Yzerman and Rob Blake were seen scouting him in person recently.

C Mason Jobst 23 y/o 5'7'' 159lbs shoots L junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=101415
Small player but captain of the team
2 way player, who puts up a lot of points on the PP.
attended Bruins camp

RW/C Kiefer Sherwood 22y/o 6'0'' 196lbs shoots R junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=196607
attended Blue Jackets camp and his brother is in the Blue Jackets organization but the Blue Jackets aren't seen as a likely destination.
according to Buccigross the Ducks, Flames, Capitals, and Golden Knights all extended NHL offers last year before he decided to go back to college
put up slightly more than a point a game last season but is well below that pace so far this season
Quote:
The leading returning scorer in terms of conference points in the NCHC, Sherwood is an explosive offensive player. He’s fast and has a lethal shot, especially on the power play coming off the wall. He finished last season with 14 goals and 24 assists, including six power-play tallies.

The New Albany, Ohio, native isn’t overly big, but he plays at a pace that NHL scouts like. His younger brother, former BU recruit Kole Sherwood, is in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.

C Tyler Sheehy 22 y/o 5'10'' 185lbs shoots R junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=118549
After putting up strong numbers last season that had him finishing 8th in NCAA scoring (1.39pts/g), putting up more points in a season than any Gopher in the last 11 years, and a Hobey Baker top 10 finalist, he is struggling this season with a 0.625 pts/g.
Good on the cycle and willing to mix it up.
Weakness is skating and there will be some concerns as to why his offence has fallen off sharply (i.e. is he a product of Justin Kloos who the Flames also went after last season).

C Colt Conrad 20 y/o 5'10'' 187lbs shoots R junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=199895
ranked 194th NA skater by Central Scouting for the 2017 draft.
known as a playmaking C with very good hands, put some scoring wingers on his line and he will rack up the points.
red flag is skating, not a very fast skater
in the top 20 for pts/g in the NCAA

LW/C Robert "Bobo" Carpenter 21 y/o 5'11'' 185lbs shoots L junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=229715
ranked 119th NA skater by Central Scouting for the 2014 draft
known for his shot
almost a point per game this season
Son of former NHLer Bobby Carpenter
attended Devils, Leafs, and Boston camps

more to come

Attended Flames camp in 2016 that will be of interest

LW/RW Sheldon Rempal 22 y/o 5'10'' 154lbs shoots R sophomore
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=142304
From Calgary
At time of posting tied for 5th in NCAA goals scored
At time of posting in the top 15 for NCAA pts/g
Attended Capitals camp in 2017
Scored more points that Tyson Jost in the BCHL (yes Jost was 17 and Rempal was 20)
Smallish frame is a slight concern but will battle and has speed

Attended Flames development camp 2017 that will be of interest

RW Max Veronneau 22 y/o 6'0'' 181lbs shoots R junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=206777
Also attended Vegas' camp
The NHL scouts' attentions became so much, Princeton asked all teams to meet him, Robertson and Teves at only designated times.
At time of posting in the top 20 for NCAA pts/g.
Veronneau has the most potential of Princeton's free agents according to Friedman

D Josh Teves 22 y/o 6'0'' 170lbs shoots L junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=197849
From Calgary. offensive d-man that loves to jump into the rush and has high hockey iq
In the top 15 for NCAA d-men in pts/g
Looked impressive in camp.
I actually think Teves has more potential than Veronneau despite what Friedman reports

LW/RW Sebastian Vidmar 23 y/o 6'3'' 203lbs shoots L junior
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=30188
The line of Vidmar-Vecchione-Foo dominated the NCAA in the 16/17 season.
The Swede is not doing as well this year without Foo and Vecchione. 0.87 pts/g this season compared to 1.17 pts/g last season which is okay because he isn't known to have same level of offensive skill that Foo and Vecchione had. Still decent numbers and he has a big body that he can use to protect the puck and create space for others.
Known as the NCAA's Mr. Third Period: http://www.ncaa.com/news/icehockey-m...ome-nations-mr
Also attended Vegas' camp last season

D Mitch Reinke 21 y/o 5'11'' 181lbs shoots R sophomore
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=195228
Another offensive d-man.
Provides a similar skillset to Adam Fox and could be thought of as a poor man's Fox
Went to Preds camp in 2016
Represented the USA at the World Junior A challenge twice
At time of posting in the top 30 NCAA d-men for pts per game

D Nick Wolff 21 y/o 6'4'' 210lbs shoots L sophomore
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=248306
A physical hard hitting stay at home defenceman that chips in a little offence.
He was ranked the 89th NA skater by Central Scouting for the 2014 NHL draft.
Not a lot of fighting in the NCAA, but was known to drop the gloves in the USHL

C Tyler Busch 22 y/o 6'3'' 195lbs shoots L sophomore
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=83629
Known as an agitator and gritty forward.
From Lloydminster Alberta.
Ranked 168th NA skater by Central Scouting for the 2014 NHL draft

Hmm Conroy at the Yale/Clarkson game tonight.

Perhaps watching Rempal who scored 2 goals tonight. Taylor is the VP of Hockey operations for the Blues

Just a correction: the eliteprospects page says he shoots L, but based on the video you linked to he's a righty. Makes him a bit more appealing as as result IMO.

Looks like we have the first team to dip their toes into this year's free agent pool.

Oilers have signed brother of Dylan Larkin, Colin Larkin to an ELC.

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=220012

Played in NCAA Division III hockey, which is considered a tier below Division I which most NHL caliber prospects play in.

Flames only have one contract left if I’m correct which they will hopefully save for Fox if he decides to turn pro when his season ends. There are probably a few Tre wasted on guys like Glass, Stewart etc. If a good forward becomes available he won’t have any options open to sign them

The Flames are still able to sign college free agents.

They are at 49 contracts for the 17/18 season.

Even if the 50th contract spot is saved for Fox, they will still be able to sign players to contracts that begin in the 18/19 season. The only disadvantage they have is that they aren't able to sign them to a contract that starts this season and burn a year of the ELC.

Also lets not forget that any college free agent signed now aren't eligible for playoffs.

One level up from playing for the ITT Tech Dragons, the DeVry Mudhens and the Gloria Smith School of cosmetology and science stuff pelicans.

Kiefer Sherwood, who the Flames were reportedly interested in last season, has signed an ATO with the Ducks AHL affiliate.

edit: Also signed a 2 year deal with the NHL team beginning next season.

Are the flames in a position to even sign anyone right now given that they are at 49 contracts and the possibility of signing fox?.

When does the 50 contract cap get lifted?

Ottawa signed UND offensive defenseman Christian Wolanin yesterday. He would have become a free agent if not signed by August this year. The word is that he is going to play tonight against the Oilers.

per Friedman, Teves and Veronneau have told NHL teams they are going to stay for their senior years.

So cross them off the list.
