The US says it will support providing advanced fighter jets including US-made F-16s to Ukraine and also back training Ukrainian pilots to fly them.
A senior White House official said President Biden had told G7 leaders in Japan of the decision.
President Volodomyr Zelensky, who has requested fighter jets for months, said the decision would "greatly enhance our army in the sky".
US approval for the scheme means other nations can export their F-16s.
This is because the US legally has to approve the re-export of equipment purchased by allies.

If it wasn't already, imo the patriot just became the most valuable piece of military hardware in the world. Every us ally will demand many.

F-16 Combat Pilot
Digital Integration’s first sim that was published by Electronic Arts still stands the test of time as an accurate simulation of F-16 Falcon (given the hardware limits of its time). Outstanding campaign and training mode first seen in this game would become DI’s hallmark.
True to the aircraft’s flexibility, you pilot the F-16 in assignments as diverse as dogfights, bombing raids or reconnaissance missions. It is up to you to plan your flight route by setting waypoints on the tactical map prior to take-off; you can also (but need not) select the armament of your plane. When you have accumulated enough flight experience, you may command entire squadrons in the fictional Operation Conquest campaign, a simple simulation of an entire war theater that already hinted at what would later become DI’s Virtual Battlefield.

^Microprose just got the rights to that series back like, a month ago. Possible sequel, who knows! But the BMS mod for Falcon 4 still gets updated and is awesome, and of course there's DCS as well which is also awesome

This seems great, but I would imagine this will be turned into a "see what we have been telling you" moment for Putin as he justifies his invasion since he was trying to convince everyone that the enemy was going to attack Russia?
Hopefully I am wrong and this spurs more internal resistance within the country and a regime change is possibly a reality.

He doesn't need to justify it, the support for the war is already depressingly high.

Currently it's kind of impossible to know where it's really at, but signs point to "probably not high".
Putin himself is clearly very worried. The (presumably) fake drone attack was kind of a pathetic attempt to get sympathy, he's been defensestrating people in power at a rate which strongly suggests he's worried about the people near him turning on him, he's still encouraging rivalries between different parts of his military despite the by now very obvious battlefield downsides, and, I think most tellingly, despite a very difficult financial situation and despite the lack of everything on the front, he's been significantly increasing the budget for the internal security that's aimed at his own people.
Clearly Putin himself thinks his position is vulnerable, and most probably he's right.
Obviously any support for the war is too much, but if Putin himself isn't actually that popular anymore, then very likely the war is even less popular. The ones who support it are likely very hardened in their position at this point, but there's really no obvious reason to think that group is the actual majority.
Unfortunately it doesn't much matter, because Russians will still not do anything about it and will keep dying in a stupid war because Putin says so.
