Pretty much never, but every generation there's a subset of Nintendo fans that say "this generation for sure"

The N64 was touted for its power when it was first released. It dwarfed the first playstation and whatever Sega had on the market.

Also the Super Nintendo was a marginally stronger system than the Genesis.

It all went downhill after the GameCube

I think part of the problem with this one is that it's just slightly more powerful than the Wii U and I'm not sure anybody was asking for just a fully portable Wii U.

With the promise of 3rd party support I think people thought it would be a little closer to next gen but now the worries pop up that will be no 3rd party support of the system is that underpowered

The rumours prior to announcement was that this device would unify Nintendo's console and handheld lines. Nintendo's overwhelming focus on the ability to take this thing anywhere points strongly to that. IMNSHO, the only reason why Nintendo is currently only marketing it as a replacement for the WiiU is to avoid an Osborne Effect that kills 3DS sales.

The Switch is going to find its market as a handheld. We won't be seeing GTA VI on it or the next Battlefield game or Witcher IV, but the third parties currently making games for 3DS and Vita should be able to carry it.

Canadian Toys 'R Us site apparently had a page up for ordering the Switch for $329, and a few others have come in around $250 US so that might be the price.

Nintendo has a live stream tonight showing it and games off. Price should be revealed too. $329 sounds about right.

Interested to see more features and software for it. I'll be flipping my Xbox One for it (3D Mario game = insta-buy) so I'm hoping it looks great!

N64 had more processing power but lacked the advantages of a CD based system

The GameCube was more powerful than the Playstation 2 as well, only the Xbox slightly outperformed it. It's a shame that they stopped caring about hardware performance after that

The GameCube was probably what made them realize that it was pointless to be in the specs race. They made good headway in getting back developers during that time, but it was really the lack of 3rd party games on the N64 that was the real reason for Nintendo's console decline.

That being said, they were selling GBAs like hotcakes back then, so it wasn't all bad news.

If Nintendo had gone with CDs for N64, Final Fantasy VII probably released on Nintendo hardware instead of Sony, and the entire history of the last 20 years of gaming is dramatically different. Not to mention the Nintendo Playstation aspect of the thing. The GameCube would have been a dominant player in that scenario.

Pretty sure Kojima has straight up said Metal Gear Solid would've been an N64 game too. They would've completely dominated that generation.

Depends...imagine this if you will:
- Nintendo doesn't screw over Sony to go with Philips and make the CDi
- The original agreement gives up a fair amount of their control Nintendo has hoarded so far to Sony, and Sony essentially becomes the dominant player.
- After Sony makes a fortune on the Nintendo PlayStation (and probably destroying Sega in the process), Nintendo wants out and Sony decides to go it alone for the 64 bit generation, and we end up similar to today. There's no guarantee Nintendo likes the CD-ROM after the Nintendo PlayStation and tries to do the N64 as we know it.
- The main difference? Garbage games like Night Trap probably still comes out, but Sony publishes it instead of Sega, and Nintendo doesn't get much say in the matter. Sony developed that one themselves.

The rumour was us$250 for the base console or us$300 with a game and possibly expanded storage. Hopefully this is true and that placeholder is for the latter.
