The comics are reflecting a more diverse society and audience than when they were all white dudes with the token lady doing laundry, cleaning the dishes, and being swooned at by all the dudes. This is a good thing.

There is more (or less) going on than that. There had been plenty of strong female and minority characters for years. Why do so many classic male characters end up feminized and sexualized?

In this episode we examine the Ms. Male Character trope and briefly discuss a related pattern called the Smurfette Principle. We’ve defined the Ms. Male Character Trope as: The female version of an already established or default male character. Ms. Male Characters are defined primarily by their relationship to their male counterparts via visual properties, narrative connection or occasionally through promotional materials.
This trope is of course part of a long tradition in visual storytelling. The process of creating Ms. Male Characters out of preexisting male heroes has been especially popular in animation and comic books over the past century. When the female spin-off is an exact duplicate, she is sometime referred to as a Distaff Counterpart. Even though the Ms. Male Character did not originate with video games, developers have made generous and frequent use of the trope over the years especially in games marketed towards young people and general audiences.

Thor I don't get just based on lack of familiarity. X-23 taking over the mantle makes more sense then Daken.

I don't think the "Distaff Counterpart" is about gender equality. There have been plenty of unique powerful female characters since the 60s and 70s. In Marvel for example, Sue Storm, Wasp, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch and Ms. Marvel.
I think Ms. Male is a kind of fetishism that probably has been proven as a good way to sell books (probably to young males). I can't think of any famous female heroes that have been made masculine.

"Distaff" means "female". Therefore, the inverse of this (a male counterpart to an existing female character or Always Female trope) is technically and traditionally a Spear Counterpart

Plenty? Not really. A few that can be named off, but that's about it. Which isn't to say that what you linked to isn't part of this push, I'm sure it is. But I don't see it as an either or thing.
More visible minorities and women as characters in comic books, even if they're assuming a mantle previously held by a man, is a good thing.

Both All-New X-Men #1 and The Totally Awesome Hulk #1 hit today. Both were really fun reads, with X-Men claiming a narrow victory as my favorite book of the week. Both establish the new status quo for the characters, while giving some tantalizing clues as to what happened in the last eight months (Banner did what? Cyclops did what?!)
The newest issue of Extraordinary X-Men (#3) was also released, and it seems like the story is finally hitting its stride. Some cool moments between Jean and Logan, and some good punching in the other half of the story.
All-New, All-Different Avengers #2 was good, and Spidey #1 (focused on a teenaged Peter Parker just starting out as Spider-Man) seems all right. All in all I'm pretty pleased with the new releases I picked up this week.

I'm surprised Sandman Overture is that high, and almost that it's on the list. Not that it was bad or anything, but it seemed a shadow of how good Gaiman's original run on Sandman was. Great art, but the long delays and ultimate delivery of a touted story seemed to fall short. In my estimation.
I need to give Descender another try.

I got a few graphic novels for Christmas this year, first time I had cracked a comic book in 3 years outside Civil War, I activated the Marvel thingie to read that arc. First one I read was the new 52 Green Lantern. Not surprisingly Geoff Johns knocked it out of the park. I am really happy that is involved in the new DCU movies, there is hope he can bring a somewhat accurate Hal Jordan to the big screen.
I forgot how much I loved Sinestro, such a great villain. Seeing him and Jordan interacting again was a throw back to my childhood.

I just found this recent article on the Marvel vs DC crossover from the mid 90s. Amalgam comics. It is a tremendous read. Fascinating so much creative control was given to the writers and artists. I'm gonna have to hunt some of these titles down at the expo this year.
