It's kind of like shorthanded goals and shutouts - the numbers are so low, it's difficult to read too much into them.

Right but when one of those numbers is 0 ... and it's the only 0 in the league ... and their goal differential is so much worse when they're trailing ... it's reason for concern.

They lose a non-trivial amount of their jump when they go behind.

Is it trivial that they are 8th in goal differential, in the entire NHL?

Of course not! They're overall a very good team and this isn't a huge deal. But I do think it's slightly concerning that their goals for percentage goes down to 21st in the league when they're trailing.

For sure. But I think it is a function of their style of play.

When they have the lead and the other team is trying to open it up, their press and transition are effective.

When down and they have to press, it isn't their game

At the end of the season, we usually see that goal differential is a very predictable stat of who the contenders for the SC, will be.

That's also a matter of bad luck, as they rank 9th in xGF% (52.99%) when trailing.

Something that will likely start to correct itself as the season goes on.

Just another reason to get some more finishers.

Also the top line was not great tonight, they weren’t passing as well as usual. But i think that might have been the blues checking well.

Need a dangerous guy on line two that can feast on the secondary matchup.

I’d like to see how many teams have gone better than .666
with 3 games in 4 nights, with travel?

No question a RW would make this team hard to play against every night. But I think they could take the third or fourth best available RW at the deadline and it would be enough.
