He's certainly not showing any signs of slowing down. 2 years isn't a term I'd be worried about.

Heck, Joe Pavelski has 48 points in 40 games this year as a 37 year old - would you not sign him to a 2 year deal?
It's two years starting next season...what are the Penguins in 2.5 years? Seems risky, they have some other guys to sign that are actually important for their future.

It's 2 years, and if he blows a tire after year 1 that's a very cheap and short buyout. Term is not a problem on this contract

I’m just saying it sounds like they gave him whatever he wanted. With a 37 year old it’s a risk. Especially when they aren’t really a cup threat in that window IMO.

Its not really a big deal...just seemed unnecessary to give him 2 years

21g 37p in 50 reg season games with the Pens.

I won't accuse him of being checked out for the last few years with the Kings, but it would be hard not to be to some extent...it also probably saved some gas in his tank by not really having playoff runs or putting it all on the line. He doesn't seem to have had an issue flipping the switch back on.

His 'bad' years were about the same statistically as Derek Ryan's good years.

Let’s not use Ryan’s contract as some sort of a standard.

I think this is a fine contract. Carter is very good.

Solid deal for a vet that has shown he still has some gas in the tank and a proven winner.

Carter's still an extremely useful player. This isn't too bad.

Someone else mentioned it in the thread and I think it is a worthwhile benchmark. Ryan was pretty good for 2 years and serviceable in the 3rd (though somewhat slotted out)...nearly everyone thought it was a very good contract.

Carter also brings the ability to play on the wing (which would have helped a lot with Ryan last year).

Father Time is undefeated, but I think this is a good move.

IIRC most people said Ryan is useful and a good player but not a good use of that cash. Carter is completely different in his role anyway. It’s way more justifiable for him. I just think at that age I’d dicker a bit.

2 years is hardly term.

And the original poster criticized the amount.

I guess for me, it’s potentially fair, but the only thing for me, as a cheap, is that other useful older guys like Perry and Spezza are signing one year, lower cost contracts. Even Getzlaf signed one year (for a little less than this one). So considering that, plus the fact this is a weird time of year to announce such a signing, I just wonder how much they bargained.

That makes sense.

Carter will turn 38 and 39 in the middle of this contract (TIL he's a New Year's Baby)

Perry's DAL deal coming out of his buyout was an incentive laden 35+ deal (he must have snuck under the wire of the 35+ definition): 1.5M guaranteed and I think he cashed in on 1.6 of a possible 1.75M in bonuses. He was looking like more of a 30pt pace player after ANA and DAL. Certainly left some money on the table these last 2 years, but he is also getting $11M from his buyout and has essentially recovered what he lost.

Spezza was also a ~30pt guy his last two years in DAL...he's about 18 months older than Carter, so his last two discount years do correlate with this Carter deal. Obvious difference is that he hasn't yet won a cup and dreams of doing so with the Leafs.

Spezza has made nearly $90M compared to Carter at only $72M. Another key difference is that Spezza made $30M in his 4 year deal with DAL, whereas Carter only got $12M in the last 4 years of his front load deal

Joe Thornton made 8M and 5M in his comparable years (obviously a tier above Carter). Getzlaf has also had a steady decline down to a ~30pt pace last season.

I guess the other eyebrow that could be raised here relates to Malkin...do they have some reason to worry he won't be back?

I didn’t consider Perry’s buyout.

The Flames have one of the easiest travel schedules in the league after the Olympics.

If he's open to offers, I'm sure Treliving will make a call, however, I suspect if Staal does make a return, it will be either back with Minnesota or Carolina.

When a player on a 60 point pace wants a $3M AAV over 2 years, you absolutely give it to him as soon as you can.

It was an extremely reasonable ask.
