hahahahaha j/k, that's stupid a stupid thought, they don't buy votes and contribute to his campaign so of course they'll get nothing. Let's just stomp the little guy to death. Or better yet, maybe they'll die of COVID or kill themselves due to financial ruin. That's much cheaper for the government.

Some Ministers doing a press conference were just asked this exact question. The answer provided is that the airline sector was hit the hardest out of all sectors in the economy during Covid. The vitality of the airline sector is extremely important for Canadians, the economy and our security.

If airlines are being compensated to stop flying to sun destinations, I would really hope they're going to be compensated TO fly to regional Canadian destinations.
The small regional airports are hurting. I get sad every time I drive past the turnoff to YQY knowing that there aren't any flights.

Yes, the US flights are still going (including Maui on WestJet).

Don’t worry, with the testing and quarantine requirements nobody will travel anywhere unless they absolutely have to anyway, whether there is a flight or not. Everyone can sleep well, this will absolutely crush all travel related jobs regardless.

I don't think any testing and quarantine procedures will deter people from traveling for vacation. Look at all the high-profile government officials who got busted because they are too selfish and downright stupid to fly away just because they want to lie on a beach for a few days!!
But cutting flights will definitely stop people from unnecessary travels.

A nice little $2k forced hotel stay carrot at the end of your trip will def make people think twice.

There is also mandatory pre-departure testing for a couple hundred per person. And if you are going to/through the US you need that on the way out as well. Family of four thats probably close to another $2k in tests.

Seen on the YYC Spotters Facebook page, a potential return in 2022 of Lufthansa to Calgary. Apparently this flight is bookable already and showing 5x weekly operated by an A330-300. This is on top of the existing Air Canada Frankfurt service. Would be great to have LH return to YYC.

Whatever happen to the Calgary Airport ask for money from the province? I remember a story about it at the start of the pandemic, but can't seem to find any follow-up.

Popular plane-spotting areas near Calgary airport closed to public access
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...blic-1.6008485
Quote:
The authority said it had to make the difficult decision to close the unofficial viewing areas along the airport's east runway last week.
The berm area was popular among many members of the local aircraft-spotting community, who used it for viewing and photography.
In a message sent to the Facebook group YYC Calgary Airport Spotters, the airport authority said the spotting area had seen illegal dumping, which increased the risk of foreign objects and debris on runways and taxiways.
The message said the spotters were not the cause of debris and noted some even helped to clean it up.

^This is big; essentially means Air Canada is betting winter travel to sun destinations is going to go way up

If things start to actually open up for travel, the pent up demand for places like Hawaii will be huge. I wouldn't be surprised to see these go daily (at least to Maui from YYC) if things are wide open.

WestJet announces new Hawaii service to Kona and Lihue starting December 19th, 1x weekly on both served by the 737 (I'm going to assume MAX).

On the WestJet front Ed Sims has also announced his retirement at year's end. Interesting timing given we are (hopefully) emerging from the pandemic and traffic should be growing. You could read this many different ways I suppose. Was talking to one of their pilots last night, he's generally pretty optimistic but this one has him a little worried.

I was hoping I could avoid the Vancouver transfer from Kona in December, but unfortunately the one-day-a-week service didn’t match up. Sadly.
