I would pick the N54 personally, but I'm biased as I had a 2007 335i sedan with an N54 motor, JB4, and decatted downpipes. It was a little rocketship, great car, only got rid of it to get into my first Aston.
Spoiler!

Cheap, easy power with a massive aftermarket would be my answer.

Mostly because I've never owned one. I've had Mercs and Audi's, gotta give this a try. I like the looks of them too, E90s have been catching my eye lately

Spent the last 3 hours reading every N55 v N54 article I can find on the internet and I am starting to lean toward the N54 as well

IMO the N55 is much more reliable. Ultimate power isn't as high but it's a very solid engine in its own right. Not many of us ever had issues with the engine in the M2 forums. It's one of BMW's more bulletproof engines.

Bummer for new GT4 owners. I'm not sure how I would feel about engine replacement on a brand new vehicle. I'm sure Porsche will do a good job replacing engines but to me it wouldn't be perfectly new.

At the very least later model BMW's have been more reliable than Audi's and MB's. Also every enthusiast should own a car with a BMW inline six at least once. They are going out with a bang as S58 is a masterpiece engine.

Did they change their turn signal noise and start up chime? Because basically until they do that BMW can go to hell.

Exactly my thought process. Gotta give it a go at least once.

House is up for sale at the moment but once that's all done with and we're moved I'll start looking. I'm hoping late summer to have one

Every mechanic should own a BMW at least once. If you can stand working on that thing most other cars will feel like a vacation in comparison.

As the proud owner of many VAG products who is familiar with ripping half an engine apart for a 'simple' water pump replacement, I say bring it on

This would also be a 4th vehicle, if it's down for a few weeks waiting for parts, big meh

I found my VAG suffering and BMW suffering roughly equal job to job. The BMW in question was just miraculous at developing every single semi-common problem so I got to spend more time with it and loathed it extra. I loved driving that thing though.

See in my head I'm picturing a beautiful summer day, garage door open, happily wrenching away beer in hand.

When I'm sure it'll actually be sore limbs, head pounding, drenched in spilled coolant, swearing and wishing my elbow bent the opposite direction to get the perfect angle on a semi stripped torx bit.

####ing germany

I guess I don't share the sentiment that BMWs are overly difficult to work on. Sure its not a 80s Chrysler 4 banger, but at least they put some consideration into taking things apart. My diesel truck is an absolute nightmare in comparison to either of our BMWs. I can change the belt, tensioner, and pulleys on a BMW in an hour, on the Duramax its a few hour job just pulling all the #### to get at it.

Yeah it's not that the German stuff is overly hard, just harder than average. The main key is it definitely takes a lot more care and patience, a hundred small clips and fasteners rather than just a few big ones like the japanese and americans would do. Not nessesarily harder, but definitely takes longer

and like burn said, still nothing compared to a diesel

Book time on an AWD E46 starter is usually about 10 hours. $1500+ job, or do it the "short cut way" and it's just a pair of hamburger hands and about 8 hours of your weekend gone.

In general sports cars from the 90s were a PITA. I had a 96 Firebird with an LT1 and the plugs and wires are an 8 hour job. The engine is halfway under the long dash and the engine barely fit in the bay widthwise.

Off topic, but what an absolute hideous design of the 2022 Outlander's front end.
It's as if they designed the sheet metal of the hood and front end snout to be aggressive and cutting edge, and then realized that the headlight design and size they wanted wasn't going to fit in the sheet metal kinks. Thus, comically small headlights, jammed in, sitting recessed way too far back of the actual front end, with painted body metal between it and the grill. Then, the area and the headlights themselvrs jewelled and chromed up to try and make it look elegant.

It reminds me of a coupe things, seeing a first year model barebones GMC Canyon they had the sealed beam headlight option, not the halogen one, and the square headlights jammed awkwardly into the space where, on the other models, the headlight until flowed a bit into the hood.
