It did go to OT so add 30 minutes for that but your point is still valid. 3 1/2 to 4 hours is pushing it. Two things would help but one of them is not going to change. Games need to actually kick off on time, not 10-15 minutes late or whatever. If it's a noon kick off then kick off at noon, don't start the coin toss etc at noon. Second thing is half time tends to drag out longer than I prefer but I think that's a college thing. Bands and the half time show (at the stadium) are part of the tradition and I don't think those are going to be cut short.

Two weeks in and it seems reasonably clear to me that pre-season/Week 1 rankings are just completely bogus, based on a combination of nostalgia, wishful thinking, and last year’s talent, all with an eye towards anticipated tv ratings and bowl/playoff chances.

That where a team ranks before the season even starts helps to determine where they end up being ranked in December is ridiculous, but the powers that be clearly like the current system and aren’t likely to change it anytime soon.

But, seriously, teams shouldn’t even be ranked until at least the halfway point in the season.

Yes, but don’t they incorporate the coaches/AP poll rankings in their rankings? I thought that they used to, maybe they don’t now, but I thought that there was some correlation or connection between with them.

The old BCS poll did I think. The new CFP poll does not and is totally independent.

However, the committee members are still mostly from power 5 schools so there’s no doubt they have a bias towards certain teams. But I tend to think the committee has done pretty well all things considered.
