HBO's adaptation of the hit video game series The Last of Us will begin production in Calgary this July, according to the Director's Guild of Canada.

The guild lists The Last of Us — which will star Pedro Pascal of The Mandalorian and Bella Ramsey of Game of Thrones — as starting production in the province on July 5, wrapping up on June 8, 2022.

Calgary's union for film and stage technicians, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE 212), also lists the series as being scheduled for production this July.

There's a couple agencies in the city that you can sign up with AFAIK. A co-worker of mine signed up with one and they send her regular emails on what they need at the time.

I have a connection on the show (not with casting), but someone who can probably get some info for you. I'll post if I find anything out.

I mean if they were looking for a post-apocalyptic wasteland they missed it by 300km or so, but you can only ask actors to put up with so much.

On the plus side, just a few more trips to Peter's and I'll be a shoo in to play a bloater.

Damn, I didn't realize the O&G apocalypse had already turned this city into a paragon of urban desolation perfect for The Last of Us

The 2nd game kind if killed my enthusiasm for the franchise but it is cool that it's being filmed here and with HBO in charge it should have considerably better writing than TWD. I wonder if people are starting to tire of the zombie survival show given how TWD wore out its welcome.

Well yeah that's what I mean. Does anyone really get excited when another zombie movie or show is announced?

They definitely aren't novel anymore, a zombie movie/show can no longer sell itself on the basis of being a zombie movie/show like before. But, for something like Last of Us with that source material and the people involved, I think it does just fine without zombies being a selling point.

By all accounts this is going to be a mega-budget production, not your run of the mill zombie thriller. HBO's betting a lot on the Last of Us brand to pull in viewers but they're going to invest to back that up. GoT is probably a better comparable than TWD.

This will be huge for Calgary's film scene and should provide a case study that can help put us in the consideration set for even more big budget productions.
