I could see this happening, as I don't believe McD will sign another contract with Edmonton.

The flames can't add for next year by just trading futures.
Flames have no cap space. Even if the cap goes 4m it just lets them keep their current roster and let them fill out the open spots with small signings. The flames also don't have any obvious cap dumps at the moment that they could move.
You could move a guy like Hanifin in a hockey trade, and that would give you around 6.5m to work with, but you're losing a key piece of your top 4 D core.

Ya Matthews can be extended next summer, nylander as well, before being UFA in 2024
So I think they wait until they know if they will re-up before any other moves of marner, especially matthews

I think the general assumption was Auston was heading to Arizona, home town hero and all that. TSN for clicks suggested otherwise at one point.
Chris Johnston (TSN):
"I can tell you, with 100% certainty, that Auston Matthews will not play in Arizona" - Johnston, when asked about free agent status for Matthews in 2024

I don't think he'll go back home to Arizona with the situation around that team either, but I strongly doubt he'll sign with Toronto. I could see him going to LA-Kopitar is UFA the same year...

I believe there is little chance Matthews leaves Toronto. The people close to the team say he loves the city and they will pay him a stupid number to stay there. I think he loves the media attention there as well. Maybe after another 8 year deal near the end of his career.

If he has a massive year he will want to cash in and extend in Toronto
if he has a #### year and then a massive year next season (the Gaudreau special) look out

By the time he gets to UFA the situation around the team will be sorted one way or the other.
I can see Matthews in AZ and McJebus in Toronto.

Well, he's UFA in 2024, and I can't see that team competing for anything at that time. LA is already a competitive team, with some exciting young players.

McDavid will end up with the Rangers. Like Messier, Gretzky et all, it's his destiny.

According to an Oilers fan I talked to on Facebook about a month ago he's going nowhere because "superstar players never leave the team that drafts them".

That fan's got 99 reasons why that's wrong and McDavid ain't the only one.

He also did the whole "They made the third round so it's all up from here and he'll have no reason to want to leave" thing.
I quickly reminded him about 2006 and told him Oilers fans said the same thing after 2017 and they proceeded to miss the playoffs multiple years before getting swept by the Jets.

That’s because by 2024 Arizona will need to be relocated.

The Coyotes are the joke of the NHL. I don't see why one of the best players in the NHL would sign there, even if it is his home town team. Maybe if Bettman pays him extra under the table...
