I really like the player but that’s a lot of money for a guy who will be 33 years old when that contract starts.
This one feels like the definition of paying for past performance and I wouldn’t be surprised if he went back to 65-75 points which was his career norm heading into last year.

They're going to end up losing at least one of their young players because of this contract. It looks had now, it'll be a buyout candidate in a couple of years

No doubt Wheeler is one of the best wingers in the league. However his career high was this past season and he's 33. I think this is a contract the Jets were dreading the closer it got. One of those contracts where they really had no choice to sign. Their cup window is now, he's the captain and heart & soul of the team. And he's an important piece.
Other teams might look to have sold high after the numbers he put up last season. However if they do hope to make the finals at some point, it won't be without him. Pretty much the perfect storm of a contending team, elite winger, age, performance and captaincy came together all at the same time.
Honestly, it reminds me of the Gio signing. The team really had no choice to sign him while he was still elite. You just hope he ages gracefully.

It's kind of an unavoidable situation when a young team finally starts putting things together in that players are going to get paid and eventually there's not enough money to go around. Management can see they are on the cusp so this signing was probably necessary if they want to go for it in the next few seasons. Some difficult decisions will have to be made going forward as this is the last season they have Laine on the cheap.

Gotta think Laine will be getting 10+
This is their last season before they have to make some tough decisions

Similar to the Gio contract.
Yeah - it runs too long, but if you trust the player to physically maintain themselves then it’s a no brainer. What other option do you have?
The signing makes sense.

Another contract where the team needs to sign to contend now but understands they will be plugging their noses at the end of it.
You cannot contend forever, and have to do what you need to do to maximize your "best chance at a cup" years.

The only thing worst than signing him to this contract would be not signing him to this contract. Captain and (current) best player, Jets simply needed to keep him for a chance at these next couple years.
Gives them a chance in that 2021ish season, where there young guys will all be in the middle of their primes and the veteran leadership should still be productive:
Wheeler - 34
Byfuglien - 35
Scheifele - 28
Trouba - 27
Ehlers - 25
Laine - 22
Connor - 23
Hellebuyck - 28
Throw in depth players like Little and Perreault at 33 and their prospects, with no bad (at the time) contracts or dead space, and that's certainly a reason to be optimistic.

Also somewhat surprised they didn't try to get it a year longer or something to reduce the hit. Obviously that doesn't work out great for all parties but (if capfriendly is right) it's a pleasant surprise to see an NHL contract where the player is 37 and will have to play his last season to make the 8.25M owed instead of some cap circumvention.

Maybe someday we'll see an NHL GM run their team the way Belichek runs the Patriots - bye-bye veteran. Of course you'd need to have faith in your ability to keep the intake of talent coming through the draft and the shrewd acquisition of overlooked players.

I feel like this is where Gaudreau SHOULD be....Flames are getting a $1.5M-$2M discount on him yearly.

Stampeders also employ this method successfully but football is a bit different of a sport in that you get immediate depth via the draft every year to fill roster spots while the NHL player development is a lot slower and harder to gauge.

He is easily worth ~11m this year; will be worth 8.25 mil in year 3; likely worth 5.5m is year 5. Great deal.

If they can win a Cup in the next five years it will be worth it.
If they can't win a Cup in the next three years, it might be Wheeler that is holding them back after that.

And have Tom Brady
The only similarity would be if you had a goalie who was always top 1-3 in the league. You could rotate the supporting cast and always have a chance.

How do you figure? An $11.0 m salary would rank him #9 in the entire League, behind Tavares, McDavid, Kopitar, Benn, Kane and Toews, and ahead of Crosby, Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Malkin and Stamkos. I think $11.0 m would be excessively high for a 32-year-old who has only once crested 80 points.

Really? The guy is a perennial ~70 point player. They just signed him after a career year and hes getting deep into the wrong side of 30.
This seems like a huge mistake.
