Yeah I made the same mistake initially yesterday and was wondering how I missed Martin Jones as a top 5 goalie in the league.

Then realized it was Seth Jones and it suddenly made a bit more sense.

I thought it was David Jones and a certain poster had hacked the vote.

One thing that was obvious to me was that only 4 players in the top 30 did not make the playoffs last year: McDavid, Karlsson, Tavares, and Seguin. Hard to rank Gaudreau ahead of any of those players IMO. 8 out of the next 20 on the list didn't make the playoffs last year, so it's clear that the higher ranks are reserved for players that can get you to the playoffs except for some clearly elite players.

If you want to see Flames players higher on this list, then they need to make the playoffs, and preferably make some noise in the playoffs.
Making the playoffs is a team achievement. Good players are on bad teams all the time.

seems ridiculous to be so forward heavy...

JG is 33rd and Hall is 6th...who takes Hall over JG? Not so sure I would take Hall of JG.

Not the right thread here, but didn’t THN release their predictions for this season and have the Flames winning the Pacific? And making the conference final.

Surprised there isn’t a dedicated thread (I’m on mobile). Not that it’s big news, but noteworthy I think. Unless I’m way late to the party and missed it.

Joel Armia also helped his team get into the playoffs and they went deep. Hell, Jay Beagle helped his team win the Stanley Cup!

Do they belong on this list of top-50 players? No? Neither does Byfuglien.

Johnny and Taylor are pretty much neck and neck. But only cause Hall has stepped his game up in the last year and a bit, otherwise I'd take Johnny over him easily. And they're twenty something spots apart? Alright.

Definitely flaws with the list. Seems to favor goal scoring ability and size.

Just about everybody on there is damn good. Could have just abandoned the ranking altogether and listed 50 players since you're combining all positions which makes it awkward.

Your analysis is flawed. I might have agreed with you before last season.

Last season Byfuglien actually played defense rather than rover. He was 3rd highest +15 on his team with highest TOI. He had .65 ppg (compare to offensive phenom Dougie Hamilton .54 and the Flames best player Gio .46)

He was the leading goal scoring D-man in the playoffs (Tied with Carlson)

Do you recall when Gaudreau was Cross checked in the back and Gio Monahan Ferland or Hamilton stepped in and destroyed any notion that this was going to be tolerated. You are correct never happened.

Here is what happens when 6-5 225 Wheeler takes an unwarranted cheap shot.

Plenty of people would take the Hart Winner over Gaudreau. I'll admit the gap is closer. But no one should be surprised the Hart winner is ranked that high.

If I was actually trying to win, as opposed to dazzle the onlookers, I would take Doughty ahead of all but 1 or 2 or 3 of those players...

I know this is a Flames board and therefore anything Oilers is terrible. But McDavid was voted, for the second year in a row, to be the best player...by other NHL players.

I'd take Crosby too if you were looking at winning just next year, but obviously the majority of the best players in the world believe that McDavid is better than Crosby, let's give them some credit too here.

McDavid can go fetch Crosby's coffee as far as I'm concerned... (and "coffee" is putting it lightly)

Malkin is consistenly the most underrated player in the league should be top 5 on that list. He should most certainly be higher than Tavares.

Not a horrible list as far as the players on it, although the order can definitely be debated.

You can definitely see a bias towards just the last season, like by how many Jets made the list

Not just recency bias but Canadian pandering bias too. Mitch Marner?? Sean Monahan is also far from a complete player.
