In related news, apparently Toddlers & Tiaras was on TV for 9 years :barf:

No, I'm not saying any of that? I haven't seen the film. Presumably those scenes are in there but again the BBFC in the UK gave it a 15 rating, the MPAA (notoriously stricter) in the US and Canada gave it a TV-MA rating. If either of those boards thought it was child pornography do you honestly think they would approve it for release?

There are conflicting narratives. Netflix put out some posters and were lambasted for them sexualizing the actors. Netflix said no no, those were an error the film is not like that. And, the movie is meant to be gratuitous and shocking, to "raise awareness" and fight exploitation of under age girls.

I think normal people see this film as vile in any context, the audience score on RT backs this up.

I agree. Any normal person would think cuties as well as toddler and tiaras are gross and shouldn't be produced. It's pretty gross Netflix removed Ramayan and put on cuties.

They were facing a lot of pressure not to release it, but released it anyways and it sounds like it's way worse than initially feared, people are claiming scenes in the movie fit the legal definition of child porn and US congress is now looking into it. I get grossed out looking at blurred images of the movie in articles about so I cant confirm how bad it actually is, but my SO and I are grossed out enough to be cancelling our account.

I'm sort of familiar, just read the plot on wiki to refresh my memory and I don't think I'd have the stomach to read the whole thing. As I understand it, it presents the love affair between a middle aged man and a 12 year girl as a natural and organic thing and has gone on to be the most identifiable cornerstone of pedo culture. 1955 France is a pretty different time and place, and I can see how the book is a relic of a fringe idea of sexuality from that time and now reads as a monstrous thing in a modern context. Given how synonymous it's become with pedo culture, I would assume the book has done tremendous harm over the years as it can provide a path and justification for pedos to act on their urges.

I think that people mis-interpret that book when it comes to the relationship between Humbert and Dolores and the movies don't go as deep into that relationship.

But Humbert was a creepy obsessive, he bribed Dolores for sexual favors and she eventually broke away and fled and was a damaged woman in the end, and Humbert was going to prison for murdering the man that got her away from him.

The movies had a different sense and feel to them as they almost portrayed Dolores as a femme fatale young seductress.

The Sue Lyon movie was a huge rewrite and left out the parts that showed that Humbert was a creepy pedo through his whole life and became a teacher so he could groom young girls.

The 1997 book really focused on Dominique Swain as an overly sexualized seductress.

I read Lolita as part of a reading assignment in University and nowhere did I see it as true Pedo positive if that's a term or pedo porn.

Yeah Nabokov's original basically wrote the book (sorry) on what to look out for regarding grooming, gaslighting and manipulation tactics used by adults preying on children.

Humbert is very clearly a creep.

Luc Benson’s life philosophy is based on Lolita. Creep. Dude even made his own version in Leon The Professional.

He’s a well known groomer.

Finally got through all of Peaky Blinders, such a good show. Tom Hardy is such a beauty in his guest role too.

Depressing to read they were about to start shooting season 6 in March when the pandemic started, and now not expected to be ready for Netflix for at least a couple years.

Finally got around to Afterlife, partway through season 2 and it is absolutely incredible. I didn't know the seasons were so short, but other that just perfect.

Just finished Cobra Kai. That was way better than I thought it'd be. Quite enjoyable.

Punisher S2 is a massive letdown. It’s getting worse by the episode. I like Punisher character but the writing is extremely sloppy or rushed or both.

The therapist might be the dumbest character ever.

Scar face ends with the main character massively addicted to cocaine, abandoned by everyone who ever loved him and brutally murdered by his enemies. The average person feels no compulsion to enter the cocaine trade from watching it, but its been idolized in gang banger culture for decades. People tend to find what they are looking for.

Netflix cancellations spike 8 fold: https://variety.com/2020/digital/new...ls-1234769354/

Netflix stock has dropped from a high of $557 USD during the pre release backlash to $490 USD, @ 441M shares outstanding, that represents a total loss of $29 Billion from what was a consistent upward trend. https://www.google.com/search?client...=netflix+stock

How does this even happen? They should have been projecting major loses well before the film was even released and abandoned it long ago. This is the same company that dropped "gone with the wind" for being problematic, but they're standing their ground on one of the most hated and financially disastrous films ever made.
