They are under now, so I don't think $30k will cause them to choose the lesser player - they can ice what they think is the best team.

Also, I don't think it has been discussed yet, but there is another implication of having an LTIR player bring you over $81.5M:

The LTIR contract doesn't count against being over the $81.5M, but it does count up until that point. In other words, the Flames will not be able to bank any money. So if Stone is $30k less than Kylington, it is irrelevant. Because either way, Valimaki's contract brings them over $81.5M, so they don't bank anything.

The only way that the Flames can bank space in order to be able to pick up someone at the deadline, is if they trade away a player. They would need to be under $81.5M including Valimaki.

Bennett's FO% needs to improve before we see him on the top rw, correct?

Both Lindholm and Bennett finished the season around 54%, but Lindholm took over 900 draws while Bennett took 70.

I just don't think there is a likely scenario in which we see Bennett in the #1 RW spot.

All else being equal, I doubt there is a preference for the 7th guy to be right-handed outside of specific situations.

I could see it being more prevalent due to the frequency of situations where left D are playing their off-side in the top 6, which is rarely the case the other way around. Looking at the Flames for example, if you view Brodie as being comfortable on the left side in a pinch (moreso than anybody on the left side being comfortable playing on the right), then it makes sense for the #7 to be right-handed. If a righty goes down, Stone comes up. If a lefty goes down, Brodie swaps to the left and Stone comes up on the right. Whereas having Kylington as the #7 D would mean that if a righty goes down, you have to have somebody else switch to the right side.

I would think the Flames will carry a 22 player roster to start the season...

I imagine that would place them over the cap...

Yes, thanks, they can also bank if they go with a 22 man roster. Basically, whoever you remove, take their salary, minus about $650k, and that is what you would save.

So if they removed Czarnik, they would save some cash for the deadline.

Hard to go all year with a 22 man roster though. A little while? Sure.

I agree.

I think Peters wants his top RW to be capable of taking 8-900 draws and do some heavy defensive work.

Same reason why I doubt Tkachuk moves there. Strong D, but next to no draws - he only took 13 FOs all season.

Now Jankowski on the other hand......

It will be a very interesting year for Jankowski. At 25 he is in his prime, it is also a contract year. I think he really needs to show that he has another gear offensively. That said, his contributions on the PK are a welcome addition to any bottom 6.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Bill Peters says he knew Tkachuk was coming back last night.

Says Tkachuk will slot right back in with Backlund and Frolik, and as the net front guy on the #1 PP unit. #Flames

Peters says Tkachuk will definitely play in Calgary’s preseason finale on Saturday vs. Edmonton. #Flames

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Cam Talbot will get the start in goal vs. #Sharks tomorrow. #Flames are going to bring more veterans to San Jose than they originally planned to.

Eric Francis @EricFrancis
Peters said Tkachuk’s delayed arrival to camp puts an end to his thoughts of playing him alongside Monahan and Gaudreau...for now.

So all this means Bennett to the 3rd line again alongside Janko. Bummer.

Or Ryan and Lucic?

Practice line today was:
Dube - Janko - Mangi

Bennett should really have frolik's spot on that second line...

It's really nonsensical to not give him the opportunity especially after he has been practicing playing on his off wing all offseason.

I think it is doing a disservice to this team to keep thinking frolik is the answer to the top 6.

I agree. Jankowski and Bennett don't work together at even strength. That experiment needs to end.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Bennett
Mangiapane - Ryan - Lucic
Dube - Jankowski - Frolik
Czarnik

I don't believe that anyone think's Frolik is "the answer to the top 6." Frolik plays on the Backlund line because of established, demonstrable chemistry, and a long history of solid defensive play for a line that gets a tonne of defensive zone starts. Maybe Backlund supplants Frolik, but that hasn't really happened yet.

I don't actually buy that Bennett should be taking Frolik's spot. Frolik's gunner mentality gives him perfect chemistey with Tkachuk and Backlund.

If we are talking lines though, I wish we could see something like

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm (obvious top line)
Lucic/Jankowski - Backlund - Mangiapane (hard matchup shutdown line
Tkachuk - Bennett - Czarnik (soft matchup scoring line)
Jankowski/Lucic - Ryan - Frolik/Dube (soft matchup shutdown line)

First you reference Frolik's perfect chemistry with Tkachuk and Backlund.

Then split them all up.

Which, all things being equal, could end up costing young Matthew some money.

Jermain Franklin @TSNJFranklin

#Flames Bill Peters put out an interesting combination this am:
Lucic-Bennett-Czarnik
That would not be a fun line to play against.
