Flames Flames news. (3/11/2009)

Great piece from Craig Simpson on his respect for Jarome Iginla, via CBC sports blogs:

Quote:
If there was ever a player that represented what a good “Canadian” player should look like, I can’t think of anyone better than Iginla.
Also interestingly it seems Simpson and Iginla's wives are first cousins.

Star Ledger on the goal from last night:
Quote:
"It was just sitting right there," Parise said. "I was surprised they didn't blow the whistle. I just took a whack at it and it went in."
Sportak's take:

Quote:
"We did a lot of things better, and we can look at that, but that being said, to win games, it takes that bit more," said defenceman Robyn Regehr. "For us, that means better on the penalty kill -- which we have to be because it's been weak for us lately -- or better on the powerplay or in front of the net, like in the third period. "We can't allow teams to score like that."
Kipper on the goal:
Quote:
"It's tough for the refs," Kiprusoff. "But ... at one point it was under my back and they were able to dig it out and score."
Canwest/Herald Hockey Notebook
Conroy on the short handed goal problem:
Quote:
``Now every team knows that,'' he moaned. ``They're going after that and they're going to take an opportunity. If they see a chance to jump three-on-two or two-on-one, they're going to
``They know we've given up a lot, and we're probably a little fragile.''
Phaneuf on the blisteringly poor PP:
Quote:
``It's not good enough,'' said Calgary defenceman Dion Phaneuf, a staple on the first power-play unit. ``The guys who are out there, we're responsible for producing on the power play - not getting scored on.
``So we know that we have to be better.''

Just more of the same cliches and excuses by the Flames.

"We have to play better, blah blah"
"Not good enough, blah blah blah"

Put forth the effort on the ice, geesh!

What exactly do you want them to say? They have to play better becaus they weren't good enough in the last three games. That's plainly obvious. The only think they left out was "on top of it we got screwed over by piss-poor officiating".

So stop reading the articles. They are asked questions and are answering them in a pretty straightforward manner.

How would you like them to respond? I realize it seems like the same old answers, but that's because it's the same old questions.

What I want to know is if so many teams aware of their weakness on the power-play in terms of giving up short-handed goals... whats being done to counter that?

to me, it looks like nothing...

On another note, the book is out on the Flames and Kipper on the PK right now..
Lots of attempts, chances and a goal by Rolston was a shot from Kippers right side at the top of the circle to Kipper's far side with the oposing player on Kipper's left side waiting for a juicy rebound... Jersey attempted this play atleast 4 times and the results were 2 posts and a goal.

Either the right defender needs to close that gap quicker or the left defender needs to stop watching the damn puck.

I don't know exactly what can be done to counter it except players not being dumb. I mean, we can't have Preston playing 2 D high and a forward out in the neutral zone on the PP waiting for a chance.

The players need to be accountable for just making bone headed decisions on the PP, like Aucoin and Kipper last night, for instance, being the ones responsible for that SHG.

keep in mind, wins against detroit and Toronto make the road trip a success. Not easy, but doable.

Here's the Herald blog today from Detroit. No Chelios or Hossa for the Wings tomorrow night.

We'll all be laughing about our panic then... until the next loss, upon which everything will repeat itself exactly as before, Galactica-style.

Here's hoping for another Wings' goalie cramp.

Unfortunately for the leafs it's inevitable.

In the end they didn't say anything we all didn't already know.
I know, I know, we're forum posters and not pro athletes, but as far as I'm concerned (and I just found this place a little while ago!) we're some of the best(1.) Flames fans ever. They need to iron out their games and get back at it. I have faith. I'm worried about the Detroit game, but I have faith.

Let's just hope they can put the media hooplah aside and forget all about that 'elite team' nonsense that always seems to make them cave in. If they can't play past it we're not going to win a cup.

1. See also: opinionated, passionate, frustrated, arrogant, obnoxious, drunk and otherwise awesome!

There goes the bandwagon again. When the Flames is winning, I am sure you love reading Flames players cliches it doesn't matter if it's been repeated several times. Now that they are struggling a bit, you can't stand them.

You have to realize that the Flames are playing without their entire 2nd line and been playing minor leaguers. Yes it is not a good excuse but injuries is a good factor on the struggle.
