Holy crap he was only 33, I thought he was a lot older then that. The show kept nibbling around the edges of his struggles with addiction.

But these guys, the ones that make a career out of it, work hard, but at the same time they party hard, and they live with a lot of pain and exhaustion and stress.

RIP.

Further reading suggests he may have died from a heart attack.

Boat captain Wild Bill was like a second father to Nick as he stood by him through his troubled times.

One of my favorites from the show

I dont know how some of the Lifers do it.

I always like the old timers talking "everyone sees the show and thinks they can make it as a crab fisherman!"

Not me.

Dont get me wrong, an episode featuring me would certainly be worth watching, but entertaining for all the wrong reasons.

"Where the hell is Locke?"

- "I think...I think he's doing Sig's taxes?"

"HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE BAITING POTS!!!"

I worked a day on a crab boat in the much calmer waters off of PEI. That was enough for me to decide I never wanted to do that. Baiting pots was naaaasty.

He was 33, probably in terms of physical shape, he was pretty active. But the guy did have a history of heavy drinking and heavy drug use at one time.

Way to young to die like that.

The show still facinates me, and yeah it is a reality show. But you get some of these guys that think its a somewhat easy gig. You work about half a year or so, make pretty good money. But a lot of these tough guys that show up to be greenhorns are ground into the dust. Some just give up after a day or so. There are some that their body gives up before their brains tell them to stop, and those are the ones that get hurt. There are some that are unexpectedly tough. There was one kid that was a college student a few years back and looked like nothing. He was skinny and a brainy type. And he just powered through the season and earned a lot of respect from Sig, though he never came back.

I think what saved a lot of lives and injuries was the retirement of the Derby System (Watch the first season for that insanity).

these guys probably end up like a lot of people that work the mines end up, with a miserable final few years of their lives.

Oh man, that'll be devastating for Will Bill - Nick became his surrogate son after his own walked away from him to join the Brenna A.

It's the same show every season but I still love DC. I always thought it was an analogy for the workplace and forming and norming of teams. Like when a greenhorn shows up and immediately wants to work the rail or hydros because he thinks he's awesome. Uh no dude, I hired to you work the grinder and bait traps....know your role and shut your hole.

Sounds like the producers are guilty of sensationalizing events in the interest of ratings though. I believe the Brenna A was dropped as they weren't "exciting" enough. I rather like seeing a well run, effective crab boat that gets it done as opposed to the drama of Jake Anderson's Saga.

That sucks, I always really liked watching Nick - battling past his addiction demons and simply being one of the best out there.

As others have said, Bill is going to be crushed.

The episode featuring Nick's death airs this week, that was a tear jerker of an episode let me tell you.

Airs or aired? Meaning this upcoming week or last week?
How did you watch it already?

It's been hard watching him this season already, including last week when he kept on talking about his kids.

Seems like a decently good guy.

Sorry, it airs on Tuesday I believe.

I watched it because it's "out there" so to speak.

The whole episode is emotional, but the last 5-10 minutes is onion cutting time.

Boy that was a hard watch. Seeing how much it impacted Wild Bill was tough. And seeing Nick's daughter (who they didn't show much) just broke my heart.

What a waste. His friends begged him not to go to Tennessee.
Addiction is an awful thing.

That to me was the worst part, and probably put Bill in hell. In the past he'd warned him, and Nick kept swearing he was clean. But clearly off camera he'd fallen pretty hard.

Bill's going to live in hell for a long time on that one. I'm surprised he went out fishing.

I like that they didnt hold anything against him and just honored his memory.

But I fully agree, that was tough viewing.
