A lot can happen over the years but it currently looks like McDavid could be the first generational player not to win a cup. Almost guaranteed if he spends his career with the Oilers (which I can’t see him doing honestly). Also, we’re wading into semantics here, but I don’t know what the levels of generational players are but McDavid is without a doubt below Crosby’s.

He's what, 4 seasons into his career? Lots of time for the team to build around him, as long as they get some competent management involved. Might not be right away, but your statement is reaching IMO.

I would suggest yours is more reaching. Especially the bolded.

Coffey won 2 in the mid 80s and then picked up a 3rd with the Wings, which for some reason I COMPLETELY don't recall.

Bourque won 5

Going back further Doug Harvey won 7

So I think my list is:

Harvey
Orr
Bourque
Lindstrom

No one has emerged from the current generation.
Coffey didnt win a cup with the Wings he lost a cup with them against the Devils. He won Stanley with Edmonton and Pittsburgh

I think he was talking about Norris trophies.

I'd wager Connor McTradeMe is going to be asking to get out of there long before a competent team can be built around him.

I would argue Nik Lindstrom is a generational defenseman based on his sustained period of being the very best blueliner. But doesn't often get talked about that way.
But in general for some reason, when folks talk about generational players it seems like it's always forwards.
Who are the dmen and goalies that should be considered generational?

Dmen: Orr, Lindstrom. Who else?
Goalies: Roy, Brodeur, Hasek? Plante? Sawchuk? Dryden?

Seems more clear with forwards: Richard, Howe, Gretzky, Lemiuex, Crosby, etc.
Lidstrom.

I think you have to look at Potvin in the period between Orr and Lidstrom. I just didn't like Coffey's game as much.

Hasek comes in front of Roy and Brodeur for me.

Potvin was such a complete defenseman. Could shoot, pass, hit. Robinson was pretty good, too. Brad Park was runner up a ridiculous amount of times for the Norris.

Maybe for back end stability, and overall D-ness (Potvin).... but Coffey’s numbers were crazy!

And yeah Lidstrom is on another level himself.

To me, on defense my list is shorter. Orr, Harvey, Lidstrom, I might be tempted to add Shore to the list.

Why were they generational, because they impacted the game and changed it, they were head and shoulders above anyone else in their generation.

Orr one of the strongest two way defensemen in his time, elite offensively and defensively. Took puck rushing to a level never seen before. Nobody in his generation could skate, shoot, defend and kick the crap out of people like Orr

Harvey - A incredibly complete and cerebral blueliner. Could rush the puck like nobody else in his age, but was so good defensively. Off the chart physical skills.

Lidstrom - I think it goes without saying that when you think of the outright best blueliner of his generation his is really the only name that comes up. Ate the clock, offensively elite and defensively elite. Never left the ice. Had a clutch factor.

Shore - Tough remorseless, absolutely vicious and feared. He was also one of the first offensive defensemen in an age where defensemen never left their half of the ice. An elite skater and body checker, his corner of the world is where you went to to die, and he almost killed Ace Bailey with a vicious but at the time clean hip check.

....Lots of time for the team to build around him - NO

...as long as they get some competent management involved - will never happen in our lifetime

...but your statement is reaching. Seems perfectly valid to me.

I was just correcting spelling on Lidstrom.

Coffey just never impressed me. His numbers were huge, and he could really really skate. But he played on such stacked teams that he took a unique skill and cashed in on good teams. And he also played in the highest scoring era, where Gretzky was hitting 200+ points, and cup winning goalies had .883 save percentages. Whereas Lidstrom could play at both ends really well.

I was watching the FLA broadcast last night, and they kept mentioning how bad McDavid was at FOs, and I think I heard them say that he didnt take a FO in the 3rd period.

LOL

He's pretty good at avoiding face offs and defensive play, and conserving energy while cherry picking to get that highlight reel run.

McDavid 45.89% Face offs this year and 42.3% career

'Not a first line center' first line center Monahan 52.17% coming off wrist surgery and 49.9% career

For good measure, Elias Lindholm 56.81% this year and 53.1% career

There was a few shifts that i saw one game where Draisaitl was doing the FO’s and not McDavid.

6 of the 9 teams get in on the playoffs. That’s a 66% rate and they still couldn’t make it. Lol

Edmonton is no good

Well when you're playing a line of 3 centres in RNH, Draisaitl and McDavid you can take your pick.
