We've been pretty liberal WFH for years. It mostly started because we were decentralized into Dallas, NJ and VA, and then spread out even more. There really wasn't much benefit of going into the office when we weren't working with anyone else who was there. It became a lot easier to hire for niche technical skills when we weren't limited to 3 markets as well. I'm kind of surprised a company like Twitter would have all their staff in a single market or two.

I find that early career and late career people generally dislike remote work the most. The mid career people with families and such see the most benefit. The younger people often have just got back from college or another job and tend to feel like they are missing out on the social aspects and also don't get the face to face experience in learning things, etc.

The empty nesters often just like getting out of their house.

This has been beaten to death in any number of previous threads. There are a whole list of pros and cons for both employee and employer for WFH, f/t office and hybrid that depend on a huge list of factors that vary for every person, employer and industry. Attempting to simplify it to a single reason is futile.


All that being said, Elon Musk is a raging lunatic, probably mentally unstable and cancelling WFH is yet another massive misstep in a series of hilarious trainwreck like blunders he’s already made.

Elon Musk spending billions just to run it into the ground might end up being a blessing in disguise

it's always been more a cesspool than anything where terrible people can have a platform to have their thoughts circulated . we are probably better off without it

All of my VFX is WFH. They didn't want to come back in and I was able to downsize the footprint. Well over $100,000 saved in leasing costs. My remote access setup is a tenth of that a year. No brainer really.


At between $30-$60/sqft for lease and operating costs WFH should make more sense for businesses depending on what you can do with your lease. I moved a whole office from downtown Vancouver to Adelaide to go from $58/sqft to $18. That's a huge savings over 10-15 years even with the costs to build a new facility.

He's an extremely rich guy who was in a bubble about what he thought people wanted or that people really cared one way or the other if some right wing or left wing loonie is banned from the site.

Very likely he was going to mess it up either way, but the economics also blew up on him when inflation hit hard and tech company stocks went down at a giant rate. He went from paying a overly high price to paying an absurd price. As companies worry about a recession, they cut advertising starting with the low hanging fruit that twitter represents.

Without context, that tweet is pretty dumb.

"If we can't figure out a way to monetize user growth and get our advertisers back on board, plus the fact that the entire tech industry is bleeding money right now in the advertising space, I don't know how much run rate the company has, and bankruptcy is a potential concern."

I mean it is easy to make fun of things that we all think he's getting wrong, but at least ATTEMPT to not look like a stupid moron when making a tweet, or when posting it on CP.

And you know what happened to the steam engine specialists.

I wonder if the present attitude of tech workers, and their demands to WFH, is more a reflection of the tech bubble mentality, which as I see it, may change as we go into a long overdue recession.

WFH isn’t tech exclusive, it’s just one of the industries where it’s a viable option.

The increased “demand” for WFH is due to the pandemic where a huge number of people across multiple industries got a taste, and now business owners and managers are trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

A recession isn’t going to curb the demand for WFH, it’s going to make it stronger. Why would someone want to pay the extra money to go into an office? Why would someone want to keep a partially filled office as an expense?

I know O/G workers who demand WFH. Same with healthcare, government, finance, and agency work.

'Tech workers' are pervasive in most industries. And there isn't some dichotomy between 'them' and everyone else - especially in office/desk jobs.
