Yeah, a recent outlying observation can’t alter a universal constant

Sometimes being hot to finish the season transfers to playoffs, sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes being cold transfers to playoffs, sometimes it doesn't.

Playoffs are about playing well at the right time, having a good game plan for the opponent you are facing, doing all the little things that help you win games, getting good goaltending, and getting some luck/bounces.

Who played well/poorly at the end of the regular season is irrelevant.

Also, Edmonton is no good.

Yep, they had a strong finish to the season last year including back to back wins over the Jets with one being 6-1. It didn't matter in the end.

I feel like with Smith, guy goes on small stretches where he's decent, and then he has a string of bad games. Oilers better hope he's not in his current streak only to melt down once playoffs start. I'm guessing the carriage turns back into a pumpkin come playoff time.

He is also easy to rattle, and I would imagine that's in the game plan of whoever plays them.

Oilers playing Smith now until his burst of confidence runs out is unwise.

If I were them I'd save as many game of this Smith for POs a I can because as soon as that first really bad goal goes in when he's out wandering behind the net or he's flopping around being theatrical he starts to spiral quickly.

Yeah, Oilers think they're special until they see Minny (8-1-1), St. Louis (9-0-1) and Florida (10-0-0) who've been just as hot or hotter.

It doesn't matter at this juncture. What matters is later. Don't tell that to Oiler fans though.

Dallas, Vegas and Vancouver competing for the chance to waste 8 days is pretty funny.

The Avs would enjoy getting revenge on Vegas. The Knights don't look anywhere near as good this year, but it might not take much to slip past Dallas, who appear to be slipping hard.

Even if VAN ran the table, I still wouldn't give them a shot again COL either.

Obviously but it seems slightly more likely that they'd get the Oilers.

Still holding out faint hope that the Oilers don't make the playoffs.

I don't care if Vegas gets in, in order to make that happen.

I'm not scared of either team vs the Flames, but the Oilers and their fans are insufferable; and the more often the Oilers are shutout of the playoffs, the more of McDavid's prime is wasted and he demands a trade out of toilet-seat ville.

Five game losing streak to end the season would be one for the ages. Plus other teams needing wins.

Dare to dream

2 of Vancouver, Edmonton, Vegas are missing though with the odd chance one of them plays the Avs

Would have taken that before the season for sure

So at this point, it looks like LA is safe, Nashville will be our opponent, and Vegas might be able to chase down Dallas to win the opportunity to play Colorado

LA has won 3 in a row and look like they're playing better than they were a week ago. Just in time to face the dumpster fire up north. I think the Kings are gonna be more difficult than the Oilers think, and could potentially win that series just based on the fact that they have better team D and goaltending.

Wish the NHL would switch to a 1-8 format. That would have Edmonton going into Minnesota or St. Louis. Instead they’re going to get a hampered LA team.

Dallas basically needs to go 4-0 or 3-0-1 to have a real chance of playing us, otherwise we're playing Nashville most likely.

Or if Nashville drops out and goes 1-3-1, they'll play Colorado instead of us.

No, it's divisional.
Top divisional winner (Col) plays 2nd wildcard.
Other divisional winner (Cal) plays 1st wildcard.
2nd & 3rd of each division play each other.

And under the old format we'd actually be playing St Louis as Minnesota is ahead of the Flames now. We'd be 3 vs 4.
