The 3 x 5 ft sections fit perfectly in my opening.
Had to cut a small section to get around the fireplace but it was surprisingly easy to work with.

Anyone know where to look for soffit? I need 2 panel to match my old stuff, but all the usual culprits only have 4 panel. I see Home Hardware has it, but of course they don't exist in Calgary, for some baffling reason.

Depending on where in the city you live there will be a Home Hardware in the nearest little town.
For example High River has one as does Okotoks.

Will they sell just a few pieces, or do you have to buy a full box?

If only there were an easy way to contact them and inquire.....alas such a technology is unlikely to exist.
Perhaps send them a telegram next time you're at the Western Union.

Grrr, so Wayne's website is "lol, not up to date". So I call every place I can find in the city. Gentek says they have some in stock. Great! "Oh, we can't sell to you, you have to buy it through Rona or Windsor. Then you can come pick it up from us." Like, who TF came up with this stupid policy?
Now, if it is a close match, I need 2 pieces. If it isn't, I need 4. But I can't figure that out until I see it. So do I order 2, or 4? So frustrating.

If you are buying through Rona you buy four just in case, then you return the other two if you don't need them. You'll still have to make six trips for other unexpected parts or tools during the course of the project but this will save you one trip.

It’s because Gentek is a distributor and Windsor and Rona are customers of theirs. Gentek will have a showroom I’d imagine you could go take a look. Or they would even likely let you in the warehouse to check. And I’d also imagine you could buy the item from Windsor or Rona over the phone once you confirmed it’s what you need so you are not making multiple trips.
If you decide to go this way, I’d deal with Windsor. They have more ability to issue a po to Gentek than Rona would.

Ya, Rona said I had to come into the store. So I went down to Gentek, confirmed it was what I wanted, drove over to Windsor, who called Gentek to get a price, then I paid for it, then back over to Gentek. Stupid. Just take my money.
Then the wind from driving on Deerfoot all the way across the city bent the first foot of it. Irritated.

Are there community standards that need to be followed for exterior house colours? Most seem very pale and boring and not sure if that’s by design.

Any private subdivision development I've seen has had such standards. I think most people just know loud colors are harder sells so there's no demand and the manufacturers base production on demand.
I haven't seen a municipal restriction on color, but they are starting to specify it must blend in which gives a lot of power to the authorities.
Interestingly in Victoria to qualify as a heritage home you need a minimum of i think 3 colors on the exterior and bold colors seem to be preferred. It is quite beautiful and elaborate

Only way they matter is if there's a caveat and there's some sort of HOA to enforce the caveat.
New communities have them to keep the builders in check, after that it's pink houses for all.

I don’t even know if there is an HOA in Hidden Valley. The painter was like, we use elastomeric paints, and the colour is up to you. I was going to pick a non-assuming grey if there is some rules we need to follow, but I haven’t seen anything that specifically lays out what you can do for colours and stuff.
