If you look at contenders not many of them have the space to add Gio, even at 50% retained.

You can retain salary when you blow it up because new young players won’t cost as much. You need to commit to a rebuild when you do it. Calgary won’t. Dunno. I think Treliving is working under an Edwards style mantra where every deal must be win-lose, and like win by a wide margin win.

Do any of them have a player they could move the other way to balance out the money?

Looks like this has the potential to be a huge trade!

Retaining doesnt help TB next year...they are already in trouble without adding a dollar.
Now if the Flames took money back, then sure but thats not likely to happen until after the season...TB is in win now mode and want to give their guys another legit shot this season.

All those guys mentioned are UFAs. Our UFAs are not quite as desirable. Prepare your self for a slap of reality.

Savard was the best dman available. Not only does the Cup favourite snap him up, they keep him out of the hands of Boston, Florida, etc. Lightning going all in. This will be a historic choke if they don’t at least make the finals.

Hard to imagine TBL being any better next year with Kucherov on the cap all year.
I’d also argue that this division is weaker than the usual alignment (BOS and TOR instead of CAR). Getting the 1 seed will be important.
Makes sense to go all-in.

Not necessarily. As Cali mentioned there is Florida and Carolina to go through.

So is this one of those that both Columbus and Detroit retain salary so basically Tampa barely had to pay him?

No.
They got Lashoff, a 1st, and a 3rd.
We’re all over here making excuses year in and year out for how hard it is to make deals in-season, and Tampa is over there playing 4D chess.
