WOW.
I like Savard quite a lot, but that's a major overpayment if true.

I guess they feel another cup is worth the 32nd pick.

If they get a 1st for Savard, then flames should be trying to get a 1st for Gio with some money retained

Savard is a UFA after this year, Gio has one year left. Expansion draft and flat cap is a hurdle. Teams are not looking for a player with term.

Exactly.
They are truly in win now mode.
They gave up a 1st last year for Barclay freakin Goodrow last year. It worked.

What’s the difference between losing a player to free agency or possibly losing a player to the expansion draft?
Giordano at $3.375M is very good value for the remainder of this season, and next season. If the Flames were eating 50%, I think there’d be a good number of teams interested.

They will just put another player on LTIR until the playoffs.

So who do you think will be interested in Gio, and who has the cap space? And will they not protect him in the expansion draft after spending assets on him? Honestly think about it, how many teams are willing to trade for someone with term right now.

Okay, sure, if everything goes well, but what if they're out in the first round like a couple years ago? Playoffs are funny that way. An early exit makes that pick in the late teens instead.
I know they're a great team, but they're also in a division with some tough outs like Florida and Carolina. As of today, they'd be playing the Panthers in round 1. There's no guarantee they would make it past that round, although I think they likely would. But then they would probably play Carolina, and that's another very, very good team to beat in a 7 game series.
It's just a bit of a risk for Savard, who is a good defenseman for sure, but isn't having a great year at all, and that's a lot of mortgaging the future for this year.
It'd be smart to make the level of pick conditional on playoff series won. Win 2 series? It becomes a 1st round pick. Lose in round one or two? It's a 2nd instead.

So he would be worth more if he was a UFA after this season? Why?
If the Flames eat 50% of his remaining salary, why would having the extra year be a bad thing? If his new team doesn’t protect him and lose him to the expansion draft, that’s a positive. It means they didn’t lose someone else.
Gio, Johnny, and Monahan all should be traded with 50% retained to maximize return. This would be intelligent asset management. Please Flames, learn from how Iggy was handled and actually get something for your assets!

Yeah, but they get their best player back for the playoffs in Kucherov, and if they can get out of that Division they will be favored to win any round after that. They used 9 defenseman to get thru their run last year, so they know the value of depth.

There is a flat cap next year, having an extra year is not easily absorbed by contending teams. Which contenders have the space to add him this year and next year?

I think we should keep Gio and try trading him as a rental next year. The value just isn't there right now. It would be a punch in the nuts to trade him for peanuts right now and retain salary just to see the team that gets him, trade him after this season to another team for a larger return, which I wouldn't be shocked at all to see happen.

With 50% retained at the trade deadline? Any of them. Maybe the flames have to take a salary back to make it work but this is not a large amount of money to fit under the cap.

The Flames could have provided a slightly better player and got the 32nd pick.

Pretty doubtful as TB wouldn't have wanted that last year on Gio's contract. They are in cap hell after this season.
